Background Generatepress Demo
Within the previous ten years, I have used a lot of different WordPress themes and have been really disappointed. Up until recently, I was using MyThemeShop, that was pretty excellent. But I had to do a great deal of customization to allow it to perform and work how I needed it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is undoubtedly the best WordPress theme I have found in 10 years. I had been dismissed and am now moving all of my websites to GeneratePress. I will enter exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review below. And if you are wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to many other lightweight and heavier multi-purpose themes. Generatepress Demo
GeneratePress is a totally free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for years in the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I am fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I have a tendency to dismiss everything in the repository. Typically because a lot of things on there is not that great, or not supported for long. However, in this case, that was a mistake. The motif now has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy matches, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Actually set up the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking exactly how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let’s first look at some of the features. I’m going to be covering the premium version of the theme, since it’s worth very penny. In fact, Tom, in the event that you read this and are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you don’t need running. This is one of the greatest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for greater outcomes in SERPs.
Impressive integration using all the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a fan of the customizer in the past, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser support back to IE8.
It also works great with the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a terrific combo. I’ve also read that people using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font wonderful built in.
Tons of filters and hooks which make it great for developers.
Excellent active support from the developer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be unbelievable. Besides have great documentation on their site, the subject has existed long enough that everything I wholeheartedly during the setup process was found within a couple of seconds in their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time to the fun part! I always test a brand new theme right out of the box with no customizations to see how fast the foundation is. This tells me a lot of what I could expect by the time I add everything to it. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to generate a lot of big files, but that isn’t the case. You can tell that Tom literally worked hard on ensuring that every record loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the amount of documents is not as important. But the size is! Have a look at a few of the core GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a developer that cares about performance! And I have Seen the same during all of the premium add-ons. They’re literally as small as possible get them. In fact, Font Awesome is most likely the biggest file included. And that is not even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 arriving round the cornerwe could expect this to get smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I’d call a modular design. You can activate/deactivate anything you aren’t using to guarantee they don’t load on your site. As the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin which has a script manager built, I felt right at home for this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You are interested, I’m using the following add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is that I no longer need to use a young child theme. This makes my life much simpler. No more editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I can literally update my GeneratePress theme this exact moment and not shed one customization. The hooks add-on definitely can help make this possible. It allows you to incorporate custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress site. Generatepress Demo
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post that you have a great deal of options. You can change the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page between the default to a complete width page, as well as disable elements.
The WordPress customizer options is where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these options are enabled from the premium add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. However, allow me to show you couple which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be created by precisely the same programmer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super simple way to add responsive columns to any page or post. Features include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid thickness
Insert custom courses
Insert custom inline styles
Equal height columns
Here is An example under:
You might want to Also catch his incredible WP Show Posts plugin too. View my featured posts on the sidebar of this website? That is using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a particular”featured” category. You can also have it show past modified/updated articles, recent posts, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works terrific.
The Segments add-in in the premium edition of GeneratePress lets you do all kinds of things in terms of design. Consider it like a webpage builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not only for blogs! I am in fact using GeneratePress for our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) that is running Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks nothing like a blog.
For those Of you that are regular readers, you probably did not even notice that I changed the entire theme that forces woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme that I had spent annually customizing. Here is a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop motif was pretty fast, but I spent a lot of time scrutinizing it. In reality, I’ve gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to print all of my customizations. My advice today is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress theme I managed to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I don’t have a kid motif. All the customizations were made with the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve working on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he could make a copy of woorkup to your new GeneratePress blog library. I am happy to allow you to know that you can now install my woorkup motif on your GeneratePress website with only a click! It is known as the Marketer theme. Get started using a fantastic blog design instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over my personal site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimal website, since I don’t use it for much. Since you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to replicate the whole look 100% in GeneratePress in under one hour. And since you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a few plugins which weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our organization site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimum site, as we just use it for our LLC. As you can see it loaded pretty fast. Generatepress Demo
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to move everything over and get it looking exactly how I needed it in under an hour. And since you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page weight 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I am moving over all of my sites for this (which comprises several EDD e-commerce sites). After I have my 9 websites all running in GP without any child themes, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The programmer has restored my faith in multi-purpose themes, which when done the right way, can actually perform faster.
And The best thing is, I now have a thousand more choices to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal alternative for performance-focused users that wish to have the ability to customize and control exactly how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the website that you build will have a great foundation to make it load quickly.
Because Of that, those who assemble WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any type of site.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Fit If…
…you Want something that will immediately appear perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you know you wish to produce a fashion blog, you may be happier picking out a niche theme that is developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
While GeneratePress has gotten a great deal easier to use, thanks to its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones when you first install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you want it to, you will almost certainly need to go in and customize matters. And while the substantial benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, particularly casual users, don’t like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the particular characteristics that clarify why GeneratePress is indeed common.
Lots Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Functionality, another area where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this can be convenient because you’ll be able to see all of the changes that you create in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress provides you decent options, but if you own GeneratePress Premium, you’ll have the ability to customize pretty much everything about your website.
For Example, if you go into the Layout area, you may configure comprehensive settings for your:
- Header — you can move your header round and alter its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can use a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post layout — like featured image dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like how many widgets to include
Likewise, The Typography place lets you control the font to get each and every element on your site, including buttons:
And You also receive a detailed area to control the color of every single element on your site.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will give you much more customization choices in the WordPress Customizer than most other topics. This amount of detail might be a bit overwhelming if you’re a newcomer. But as soon as you realize how the preferences come together, you will have full control over how your site looks.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Across All its attributes, GeneratePress always has a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The entire motif is less than 30 kB, and it is about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And a few poorly coded topics can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which helps you avoid the leave blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Put That together, and you obtain a superfast-loading motif. How fast? To give you an idea, I ran a small test.
First, I set up a vacant site using a random popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That’s Not bad in any way! But GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on exactly the exact same test site without changing anything else. Here is how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% fewer
If You perform that same test with different themes, you’ll continue to see that GeneratePress is among the fastest-loading WordPress themes in existence. Generatepress Demo
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Past Giving you more design controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features like:
- Elements — a unique feature that lets you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a exceptional page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is kind of like lightweight page building. It permits you to create different”sections” on a webpage, each with their own layout and column preferences.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular port where you could pick and choose what features you want to trigger.
That Way, you do not need to slow your site down for a quality which you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The last, you needed to build GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which left the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the developer added a fresh Website Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users which lets you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them right from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a couple buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Comprehensive Control Over Each Piece Of Content
With Most topics, every page and post will use the very same configurations for the most part. You might have some custom formats or templates — however you don’t have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a new Design meta box for each and every page and post:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (like altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain components, such as your header, navigation menu, article featured image, article title, or footer
- Create a special”container” to your page builder
Where These controls are the most useful is if you are using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you’re in a position to produce the correct baseline for your page builder design, making it easy to create custom articles as needed. Generatepress Demo
GeneratePress Pricing: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress motif is available for free at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you’re seriously interested in utilizing GeneratePress, I believe you need to buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what produces the theme so elastic. The free version does not give you almost as many configurations from the WordPress Customizer. And you will also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still quite affordable. It costs just $39.95, and that gives you use on infinite sites. You will also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to continue receiving support and updates after the initial year (you can, obviously, keep using GeneratePress following the first year without renewing — you just won’t receive any more updates).
When You believe the normal premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a fantastic value.
As I mentioned, I do not believe GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You want a niche-specific theme, you can probably save time by buying a theme that satisfies your needs for your market out of day one.
However, If you are willing to spend some time changing preferences, then GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any sort of WordPress site. Or, you may even have the ability to locate a starter website that fits your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It is among those fastest-loading WordPress themes that you will find. So if you’re looking for the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a great decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, you shouldn’t have any difficulty making your website load in under one second. Generatepress Demo
