Intro Generatepress Custom Post Type
Within the past 10 years, I’ve used a great deal of different WordPress topics and have been very disappointed. Up until recently, I had been utilizing MyThemeShop, that was pretty excellent. However, I had to perform a great deal of customization to make it perform and operate how I wanted it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is by far the best WordPress theme I have discovered in 10 years. I was dismissed and am now moving all my websites to GeneratePress. I will go into precisely why in my in-depth GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I’ve attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi as well as several other lightweight and thicker multi-purpose themes. Generatepress Custom Post Type
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I’ve really seen it for many years from the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I am pretty picky when it comes to web performance, and so I have a tendency to dismiss everything from the repository. Typically because a lot of stuff on there is not that good, or not encouraged for long. Nonetheless, in this circumstance, this was a mistake. The theme now has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy matches, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So clearly Tom is doing something right here.
I Really set up the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking precisely how I was imagining a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let us first look at some of the qualities. I will be covering the superior edition of the theme, since it’s worth very penny. In fact, Tom, if you ever read this and are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you don’t want running. This is one of the greatest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all devices.
Schema built-in, for better outcomes in SERPs.
Dramatic integration using the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a fan of the customizer previously, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser support back to IE8.
It also works great with all the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I’ve also read that people using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font wonderful built in.
Tons of filters and hooks which make it great for programmers.
Excellent active support from the programmer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be incredible. Besides have great documentation on their website, the subject has been around long enough that everything I Googled during the setup process was found within a couple of seconds in their own forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time to the fun part! I always test a brand new theme right from the box without any customizations to just see how fast the base is. This tells me a lot of what I could expect by the time I add everything to it. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to produce a lot of big files, but that is not the case. You may tell that Tom literally worked hard on ensuring every record loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the number of files is not as significant. But the size is! Take a look at some of the center GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a developer that cares about performance! And I’ve Seen exactly the same during all of the premium add-ons. They’re as small as you can possibly get them. In reality, Font Awesome is most likely the biggest file included. And that isn’t even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 coming around the corner, we can expect that to secure smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I’d call a modular design. You can activate/deactivate whatever you are not using to guarantee they don’t load on your site. Since the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin that has a script manager built, I felt at home for this. Everything should be made this way.
If You’re curious, I am using the next add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best characteristics of GeneratePress is I no more have to use a young child motif . This makes my life so much easier. No more editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I will literally update my GeneratePress motif this very minute rather than shed a single customization. The hooks add-on definitely can help make this possible. It permits you to add custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress site. Generatepress Custom Post Type
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post that you have a great deal of options. You are able to alter the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page between the default option to a full width page, as well as disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, a lot of these options are enabled by the superior add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. However, let me show you couple which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be made by precisely the same developer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to add responsive columns to any page or post. Features include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid thickness
Insert custom classes
Insert custom inline styles
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You May Want to Also grab his incredible WP Show Posts plugin too. See my featured posts on the sidebar of this website? That’s using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a specific”featured” category. You can also have it show last modified/updated posts, recent posts, etc.. I am using the free version and it works terrific.
The Segments add-in in the premium version of GeneratePress allows you to perform all sorts of things concerning design. Think of it like a webpage builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not only for blogs! I’m in reality utilizing GeneratePress to our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) that is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to check it out. However, as you can see below, it looks like a blog.
For all those Of you who are regular readers, you likely did not even notice I changed the whole motif that powers woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme which I had spent annually customizing. Here is a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop theme was already pretty fast, but I spent a lot of time scrutinizing it. In fact, I’ve gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to publish all my customizations. My advice today is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress theme I managed to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I don’t have a child motif. All the customizations were created with the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve running on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he could make a replica of woorkup for the new GeneratePress site library. I’m happy to allow you to know that now you can install my woorkup motif on your GeneratePress site with only a single click! It is known as the Marketer motif. Get started with a fantastic blog design instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my private site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimal website, as I do not use it for much. Since you can see it already loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to replicate the entire appearance 100 percent in GeneratePress in under one hour. And since you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a couple plugins which weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our business site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimal site, as we simply use it to our LLC. Since you can see it already loaded pretty quickly. Generatepress Custom Post Type
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to move everything over and get it looking just how I wanted it in under one hour. And since you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page weight 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I am moving over all my sites for this (which comprises some EDD e-commerce websites ). After I have my 9 websites all running in GP without any child themes, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The developer has revived my faith in multi-purpose subjects , and that when done the correct way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best thing isI finally have a thousand more options to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal alternative for performance-focused users that wish to have the ability to customize and control exactly how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the website that you build will have a great base to make it load quickly.
Because Of that, those who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll normally pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any kind of site.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Fit If…
…you Want something which will instantly look perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you know you want to produce a style blog, you may be happier picking out a niche theme that is developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
While GeneratePress is becoming a lot easier to use, as a result of its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you initially install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you’ll almost certainly need to go in and customize things. And though the substantial advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, especially casual users, do not like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the specific characteristics that explain why GeneratePress is so popular.
Lots Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Performance, another place where GeneratePress does well is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this is convenient as you’ll have the ability to see all of the changes that you create in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress provides you adequate possibilities, but should you own GeneratePress Premium, you’ll have the ability to customize nearly all about your website.
For Example, if you go in the Layout region, you can configure detailed settings for yourown:
- Header — you can move your header around and alter its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can utilize one or two sidebars
- Blog post layout — like featured image dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like the number of widgets to add
Similarly, That the Typography area lets you control the font to get every single element on your website, including buttons:
And You also get a thorough area to control the color of every single element on your website.
All In all, GeneratePress will give you much more customization choices in the WordPress Customizer compared to most other themes. This amount of detail may be a bit overwhelming if you are a newcomer. But once you realize how the preferences come together, you will have full control over how your website looks.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Around All its features, GeneratePress always has a focus on exceptional performance and clean code. The whole motif is less than 30 kB, which will be about as little as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded themes can even surpass 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which will help you avoid the render blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Place That collectively, and you get a superfast-loading motif. How fast? To give you an idea, I ran a little test.
First, I set up an empty website using a random popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its functionality with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That is Not bad in any way! However, GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on exactly the same test site without changing anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance grade of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% less
If You do that same test with different topics, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is among the fastest-loading WordPress topics in existence. Generatepress Custom Post Type
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Past Giving you more style controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature that lets you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a unique page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is kind of like lightweight page construction. It permits you to create separate”sections” onto a page, each with their own layout and column settings.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular port where you could pick and choose what features you want to activate.
That Way, you do not have to slow your site down for a quality which you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The past, you needed to construct GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which left the theme difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, though, the developer added a fresh Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users that lets you easily import any one of the 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them right from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a few buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Comprehensive Control Over Every Piece Of Content
With Most topics, each post and page will use the very same configurations for the most part. You might have some custom formats or templates — however you don’t have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a brand new Layout meta name box for every single page and post:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to use
- Disable certain components, like your header, navigation menu, article featured image, article title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” for your own page builder
Where These controls would be the most helpful is if you are using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain components, you are in a position to produce the correct baseline for your own page builder layout, making it easy to create custom articles as needed. Generatepress Custom Post Type
GeneratePress Replies: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress motif is available for free at WordPress.org.
That said, If you’re serious about utilizing GeneratePress, I believe you should buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what makes the theme so flexible. The free version doesn’t give you nearly as many settings in the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still fairly reasonably priced. It costs just $39.95, and that gives you use on unlimited websites . You’ll also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to continue receiving support and updates following the initial year (you can, of course, continue using GeneratePress following the initial year without beating — you just won’t get any more upgrades ).
When You believe the normal premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a great value.
As I mentioned, I don’t think GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that fits your requirements for your niche from day one.
However, If you are ready to spend some time changing settings, GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any type of WordPress site. Or, you might even be able to locate a starter website that fits your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It’s one of the fastest-loading WordPress themes that you will find. Therefore, if you’re seeking the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a good choice.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, you shouldn’t have any problem making your site load in under one second. Generatepress Custom Post Type
