Background Generatepress Combined Header
Over the past ten decades, I have used a great deal of different WordPress topics and have been very disappointed. Up until recently, I was utilizing MyThemeShop, that was pretty excellent. But I had to do a lot of customization to make it do and operate the way I wanted it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is by far the finest WordPress theme I have discovered in 10 years. I was blown away and am now moving all my websites to GeneratePress. I’ll enter precisely why in my in-depth GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I’ve attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to several other lightweight and thicker multi-purpose themes. Generatepress Combined Header
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I have really seen it for many years in the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I am fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I have a tendency to ignore everything from the repository. Typically because a lot of things on there is not that good, or not encouraged for long. However, in this circumstance, that was a mistake. The theme currently has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy installs, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Actually installed the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking exactly how I was imagining a theme should get the job done. And I will go into that more below, but let’s first look at a number of the features. I’m going to be covering the superior edition of the theme, since it’s worth . Actually, Tom, in the event that you ever read this and are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you do not want running. This is only one of the biggest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for greater results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration using all the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a lover of the customizer previously, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser support back to IE8.
It also works great with all the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these really are a terrific combo. I have also read that people using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font awesome built-in.
Tons of hooks and filters which make it great for developers.
Excellent active service from the developer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their website, the theme has existed long enough that everything I wholeheartedly throughout the setup process was found inside a couple of seconds from their forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time to the fun part! I test a new theme right from the box without any customizations to just see how fast the foundation is. This tells me a lot of what I can expect by the time that I add everything to it. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to generate a lot of big files, but that is not the case. You may tell that Tom actually worked hard on ensuring every file loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the number of documents isn’t as significant. But the dimensions is! Have a peek at some of the core GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a developer that cares about functionality! And I’ve Seen the same during each the premium add-ons. They’re as small as you can possibly get them. In fact, Font Awesome is most likely the largest file included. And that isn’t even his. With Font Awesome 5 arriving round the cornerwe can anticipate that to get smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I’d call a modular layout. You can activate/deactivate anything you aren’t using to ensure they don’t load on your site. Since the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin that has a script manager built, I felt at home for this. Everything should be made this way.
If You are interested, I am using the following add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is that I no longer have to use a Child motif . This makes my life much simpler. No more editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I can literally upgrade my GeneratePress motif this exact moment rather than lose a single customization. The hooks add-on certainly can help make it possible. It allows you to add custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress site. Generatepress Combined Header
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a lot of alternatives. You are able to change the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page between the default to a complete width page, in addition to disable elements.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, a lot of these options are permitted from the superior add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we would be here all day. But allow me to show you few which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also made by the exact same programmer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to add responsive columns into any page or article. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid width
Add Customized classes
Add custom inline styles
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You May Want to Also catch his incredible WP Display Posts plugin also. See my featured articles on the sidebar of this website? That is using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a specific”featured” category. You might also get it show last modified/updated posts, recent posts, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works terrific.
The Sections add-on in the premium edition of GeneratePress allows you to do all sorts of things concerning design. Think of it like a webpage builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not just for blogs! I am in reality using GeneratePress to our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) that is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to look it over. But as you can see below, it looks nothing like a site.
For those Of you who are regular readers, you likely didn’t even notice that I changed the whole motif that forces woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif which I had spent annually customizing. Here’s a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop motif was already pretty fast, but I spent a great deal of time customizing it. In reality, I have gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to print all of my customizations. My advice now is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress motif I was able to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I don’t have a child motif. All the customizations were made using the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have running on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he can make a copy of woorkup for the new GeneratePress blog library. I am happy to allow you to know that now you can install my woorkup motif in your own GeneratePress site with just a single click! It’s known as the Marketer motif. Get started with a great blog design instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved within my private site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimum website, since I don’t use it to get much. Since you can see it already loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to duplicate the entire appearance 100 percent in GeneratePress in under an hour. And since you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a couple plugins that weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our organization website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimum site, as we just use it for our LLC. As you can see it already loaded pretty quickly. Generatepress Combined Header
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to again move everything over and get it looking exactly how I needed it in under one hour. And since you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I managed to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page burden 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I’m moving over all of my sites for this (which includes several EDD e-commerce websites ). Once I’ve got my 9 sites all running in GP with no child topics, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The developer has revived my faith in multi-purpose themes, and that when done the correct way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best thing is, I now have a thousand more options to pick from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal alternative for performance-focused users that want to be able to customize and control exactly how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the site that you build will have a great foundation to make it load quickly.
Since Of that, those who assemble WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any type of site.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Fit If…
…you Need something that will immediately look perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you know you want to create a fashion blog, you might be happier choosing a market theme that’s developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
While GeneratePress has gotten a lot easier to use, as a result of its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you first install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you want it to, you will most likely will need to go in and customize matters. And while the significant benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, especially casual users, don’t like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the specific characteristics that explain why GeneratePress is so popular.
Lots Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Performance, another area where GeneratePress does well is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, which can be convenient as you will be able to see all of the changes that you make in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress gives you decent possibilities, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you’ll have the ability to customize nearly all about your site.
For Example, if you go into the Layout region, you can configure comprehensive settings for your:
- Header — you can move your header around and alter its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can utilize a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post design — such as featured picture size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like how many widgets to include
Similarly, The Typography place enables you to control the font for each and every element on your site, such as buttons:
And You also receive a thorough region to control the color of every single element on your site.
All In all, GeneratePress will give you much more customization options in the WordPress Customizer compared to most other themes. This level of detail might be a little overwhelming if you are a newcomer. But as soon as you realize how the preferences come together, you will have full control on how your website appears.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Around All of its features, GeneratePress always has a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The entire theme is less than 30 kB, and it will be about as small as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded themes can even surpass 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which helps you avoid the render obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Put That collectively, and you get a superfast-loading theme. How fast? To give you an idea, I ran a small test.
First, I put up an empty site utilizing a random popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its functionality with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That is Not bad at all! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on exactly the exact same test site without changing anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% fewer
If You perform the exact same test with other themes, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is among those fastest-loading WordPress topics in existence. Generatepress Combined Header
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Past Giving you more design controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other useful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature that lets you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a exceptional page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is kind of like lightweight page building. It lets you create separate”sections” onto a page, each with their own layout and column preferences.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular interface where you could select and choose exactly which characteristics you would like to trigger.
That Way, you do not have to slow your site down for a feature which you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The past, you had to construct GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which made the motif difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the programmer added a fresh Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users which lets you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them right from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a few buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Detailed Control Over Every Bit Of Content
With Most themes, every post and page will use the very same configurations for the most part. You may have some custom formats or templates — but you don’t have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a brand new Design meta name box for every single post and page:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (like changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain elements, like your header, navigation menu, post featured image, article title, or footer
- Create a special”container” for your page builder
Where These controls are the most helpful is if you’re using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain components, you are able to produce the correct baseline for your own page builder layout, which makes it easy to create custom content as needed. Generatepress Combined Header
GeneratePress Replies: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress theme can be obtained for free at WordPress.org.
That said, If you are seriously interested in using GeneratePress, I believe you should buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what makes the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you nearly as many configurations in the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still fairly reasonably priced. It costs only $39.95, and that provides you use on unlimited websites . You will also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to continue receiving support and updates following the initial year (you can, of course, continue using GeneratePress after the first year without renewing — you won’t receive any more upgrades ).
When You consider that the normal premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a fantastic price.
As I said, I don’t think GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You desire a niche-specific theme, you can probably save time by buying a theme that satisfies your needs for your market out of day one.
However, If you’re willing to spend some time changing settings, GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any sort of WordPress site. Or, you may even have the ability to locate a starter website that fits your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It is among those fastest-loading WordPress themes you will locate. Therefore, if you’re seeking the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a great decision.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, you shouldn’t have any problem making your site load in under one minute. Generatepress Combined Header
