Background Generatepress Blog Layout
Within the past ten years, I’ve used a lot of different WordPress themes and have been really disappointed. Up until recently, I was using MyThemeShop, that was pretty good. But I still had to perform a lot of customization to allow it to perform and operate how I wanted it to. A few of weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s undoubtedly the best WordPress theme I have found in 10 years. I was blown away and am now moving all of my sites to GeneratePress. I will enter exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I’ve tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi as well as several other lightweight and heavier multicolored themes. Generatepress Blog Layout
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for years in the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I am pretty picky when it comes to web performance, so I tend to dismiss everything in the repository. Typically because a lot of stuff on there is not that good, or not encouraged for long. However, in this circumstance, that was a mistake. The motif currently has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy installs, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So clearly Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Really set up the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking precisely how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I will go into that more below, but let’s first look at some of the qualities. I’m going to be covering the premium edition of the theme, because it’s worth very penny. Actually, Tom, if you read this and so are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you do not want running. This is one of the greatest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for greater results in SERPs.
Impressive integration with the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a lover of the customizer previously, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser service back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with all the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these really are a terrific combo. I’ve also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font awesome built in.
A lot of hooks and filters that make it great for programmers.
Great active support from the programmer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their website, the theme has been around long enough that what I wholeheartedly throughout the setup procedure was found within a few seconds in their forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time to the fun part! I test a new theme right from the box without any customizations to just see how quickly the base is. This tells me a lot of what I can expect by the time that I add everything to it. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to produce a whole lot of big files, but that is not the situation. You may tell that Tom actually worked hard on ensuring that every record packed in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the amount of documents isn’t as significant. But the size is! Have a look at some of the core GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a developer that cares about functionality! And I have Seen exactly the same during all the premium add-ons. They’re literally as small as possible get them. In reality, Font Awesome is most likely the largest file contained. And that is not even his. With Font Awesome 5 coming around the corner, we can expect that to get smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I would call a modular layout. You can activate/deactivate whatever you aren’t using to ensure they don’t load on your site. As the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin that has a script manager built, I felt right at home for this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You are interested, I’m using the next add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best characteristics of GeneratePress is I no longer need to use a young child motif . This makes my life much simpler. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php files. I can literally update my GeneratePress theme this exact minute rather than shed a single customization. The hooks add-on certainly can help make this possible. It permits you to incorporate custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress site. Generatepress Blog Layout
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post that you have a great deal of options. You are able to change the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page involving the default option to a full width page, as well as disable elements.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Remember, lots of these options are permitted from the superior add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. However, allow me to show you few which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be created by the same developer as GeneratePress. It enables you a super simple way to incorporate responsive columns to any page or post. Features include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid width
Insert Customized courses
Add custom inline designs
Equal height columns
Here is An example under:
You May Want to Also catch his amazing WP Display Posts plugin too. See my featured posts on the sidebar of this site? That’s using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a specific”featured” category. You might also get it show past modified/updated posts, recent articles, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works terrific.
The Segments add-in in the premium edition of GeneratePress allows you to perform all kinds of things in terms of design. Think of it like a webpage builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not just for blogs! I am in reality using GeneratePress to our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) which is running Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to look it over. However, as you can see below, it looks nothing like a blog.
For all those Of those that are regular readers, you probably did not even notice that I changed the entire motif that forces woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif that I had spent a year customizing. Here is a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop motif was already pretty quickly, but I invested a great deal of time scrutinizing it. In reality, I have gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to publish all my customizations. My advice today is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress motif I managed to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I don’t have a kid motif. All the customizations were made using the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve running on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he can create a replica of woorkup to your new GeneratePress site library. I am happy to let you know that now you can install my woorkup theme on your GeneratePress website with only a click! It is called the Marketer motif. Get started with a great blog design immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my private site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimum site, since I do not use it for much. As you can see it already loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to duplicate the entire appearance 100% in GeneratePress in under one hour. And as you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was even able to eliminate a few plugins that weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our business website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimum site, as we simply use it for our LLC. Since you can see it already loaded pretty fast. Generatepress Blog Layout
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to again move everything over and get it looking exactly how I wanted it in under one hour. And since you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page weight 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I’m moving over all my sites for this (which comprises some EDD e-commerce sites). Once I’ve got my 9 sites all running in GP with no child topics, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The programmer has restored my faith in multi-purpose themes, and that when done the correct way, can actually perform faster.
And The best thing isI finally have a billion more choices to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal alternative for performance-focused users who want to have the ability to personalize and control precisely how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the website that you build will have a fantastic foundation to make it load fast.
Since Of that, people who assemble WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They will normally pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any type of website.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Combination If…
…you Need something which will instantly look perfect from the box.
For Example, if you realize you wish to create a fashion blog, you may be happier choosing a market theme that’s developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
While GeneratePress is becoming a great deal simpler to use, as a result of its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones when you initially install it.
So To create GeneratePress look how you want it to, you’ll most likely will need to go in and customize things. And while the significant advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, especially casual users, don’t like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the specific characteristics that clarify why GeneratePress is indeed common.
Lots Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Functionality, another place where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this can be convenient because you’ll be able to see all of the changes that you make in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress gives you adequate options, but if you own GeneratePress Premium, you will be able to customize pretty much everything about your website.
For Example, if you go into the Layout region, you may configure comprehensive settings to yourown:
- Header — you can move your header around and alter its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can use one or two sidebars
- Blog post design — like featured image size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like how many widgets to include
Similarly, The Typography place lets you control the font for every single element on your website, such as buttons:
And You also receive a detailed area to control the colour of each and every element on your site.
All In all, GeneratePress will provide you much more customization options from the WordPress Customizer compared to most other themes. This amount of detail may be a little overwhelming if you’re a newcomer. But as soon as you realize how the settings come together, you’ll have complete control over how your website appears.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Around All of its attributes, GeneratePress always includes a focus on exceptional performance and tidy code. The entire motif is less than 30 kB, which will be about as little as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which will help you avoid the render blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Place That together, and you get a superfast-loading motif. How quickly? To give you a sense, I conducted a little test.
First, I set up a vacant website using a haphazard popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its performance with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That’s Not bad in any way! However, GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on exactly the exact same test website without altering anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% fewer
If You perform that same test with different topics, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is one of the fastest-loading WordPress themes in life. Generatepress Blog Layout
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Past Giving you more design controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other useful features like:
- Elements — a exceptional feature that allows you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a unique page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is sort of like lightweight page construction. It lets you create different”sections” onto a page, each with their own layout and column settings.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular interface where you can pick and choose what features you want to trigger.
That Way, you don’t need to slow your site down for a quality that you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The past, you needed to build GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which made the motif difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, however, the developer added a new Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users that allows you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them directly from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a couple buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Comprehensive Control Over Every Bit Of Content
With Most themes, each post and page will use the same settings for the most part. You may have some custom templates or formats — but you don’t have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a new Design meta box for each and every page and post:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (like altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain elements, like your header, navigation menu, article featured image, post title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” to your page builder
Where These controls would be the most useful is if you’re using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain components, you are in a position to produce the correct baseline for your own page builder design, making it easy to create custom content as needed. Generatepress Blog Layout
GeneratePress Replies: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress theme can be obtained at no cost at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you are serious about using GeneratePress, I believe you need to buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what produces the theme so flexible. The free version doesn’t give you almost as many configurations from the WordPress Customizer. And you will also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still quite affordable. It costs just $39.95, and that gives you use on unlimited sites. You’ll also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to keep on receiving support and updates following the first year (you can, obviously, continue using GeneratePress following the initial year without renewing — you just won’t get any more upgrades ).
When You believe that the typical premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a great value.
As I mentioned, I do not think GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by buying a theme that fits your needs for your niche out of day one.
However, If you’re ready to spend some time altering preferences, then GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any sort of WordPress website. Or, you might even be able to locate a starter site that fits your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It’s among the fastest-loading WordPress themes that you will locate. So if you’re looking for the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a great choice.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, you should have no problem making your site load in under one minute. Generatepress Blog Layout
