Introduction Generatepress Anchor Below Sticky Menu
Within the past 10 decades, I have used a lot of different WordPress themes and have been really disappointed. Up until recently, I had been using MyThemeShop, that was pretty excellent. But I had to do a great deal of customization to allow it to do and operate how I needed it to. A couple weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is by far the best WordPress theme I’ve found in 10 years. I had been blown away and am now moving all my websites to GeneratePress. I’ll go into exactly why in my in-depth GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I’ve tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi in addition to many other lightweight and heavier multicolored themes. Generatepress Anchor Below Sticky Menu
GeneratePress is a totally free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I have really seen it for many years in the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I’m pretty picky when it comes to web performance, so I tend to ignore everything in the repository. Typically because a lot of things on there is not that good, or not supported for long. Nonetheless, in this case, that was a mistake. The motif currently has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ active matches, with over 500 5-star ratings. So clearly Tom is doing something right here.
I Actually set up the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking precisely how I was imagining a theme should get the job done. And I’ll go into that more below, but let’s first look at a number of the features. I’m going to be covering the superior version of the theme, because it’s worth very penny. In fact, Tom, in the event that you read this and are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you do not need running. This is one of the greatest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Impressive integration using the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a lover of the customizer in the past, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser service back to IE8.
It also works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I have also read that people using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font wonderful built-in.
A lot of filters and hooks that make it great for programmers.
Excellent active support from the developer. Normally, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be incredible. Besides have good documentation on their website, the theme has existed long enough that everything I Googled throughout the setup process was found within a few seconds in their forum.
Going Deep Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time for the fun part! I test a brand new theme right out of the box without any customizations to just see how quickly the foundation is. This tells me a great deal of what I could expect by the time I add everything for this. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to produce a lot of big files, but this isn’t the case. You may tell that Tom actually worked hard on ensuring every record loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the number of files is not as significant. But the dimensions is! Take a peek at a few of the center GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a programmer that cares about functionality! And I’ve Seen exactly the same throughout each the premium add-ons. They are as small as possible get them. In fact, Font Awesome is probably the biggest file included. And that isn’t even his. With Font Awesome 5 coming round the cornerwe can expect that to secure smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I’d call a modular design. It is possible to activate/deactivate whatever you are not using to ensure they do not load on your site. As the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin which has a script supervisor built, I felt right at home for this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You’re interested, I am using the next add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best characteristics of GeneratePress is that I no longer have to use a Child theme. This makes my life much simpler. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php files. I can literally update my GeneratePress theme this exact minute rather than shed a single customization. The hooks add-on certainly can help make this possible. It permits you to incorporate custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress site. Generatepress Anchor Below Sticky Menu
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a lot of alternatives. You are able to alter the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page between the default option to a full width page, in addition to disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Remember, lots of these options are permitted from the premium add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. However, let me show you few which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be made by precisely the same programmer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to add responsive columns into any page or post. Features include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid width
Add Customized classes
Add custom inline styles
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You May Want to Also grab his incredible WP Display Posts plugin also. View my featured articles on the sidebar of this site? That’s using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a specific”featured” category. You might also have it show last modified/updated posts, recent articles, etc.. I am using the free version and it works terrific.
The Sections add-on in the premium version of GeneratePress allows you to perform all sorts of things concerning design. Consider it like a page builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not only for blogs! I’m in fact using GeneratePress for our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) which is running Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to look it over. However, as you can see below, it looks like a blog.
For those Of those who are regular readers, you likely didn’t even notice that I changed the whole theme that powers woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif which I had spent a year customizing. Here’s a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop motif was already pretty quickly, but I invested a great deal of time customizing it. In fact, I’ve gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to publish all my customizations. My advice today is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress motif I was able to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I do not have a kid theme. Each of the customizations were created with the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve running on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he could make a replica of woorkup to your brand new GeneratePress site library. I’m happy to allow you to know that now you can install my woorkup theme on your own GeneratePress site with only a single click! It’s known as the Marketer motif. Get started with a great blog design instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over my private site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimal site, since I don’t use it to get much. Since you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to duplicate the entire look 100 percent in GeneratePress in under one hour. And since you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was even able to eliminate a couple plugins which weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our business site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimal website, as we just use it for our LLC. As you can see it loaded pretty fast. Generatepress Anchor Below Sticky Menu
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to move everything over and get it looking exactly how I needed it in under an hour. And as you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I managed to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page burden 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I am moving over all my sites to it (which comprises several EDD e-commerce sites). After I’ve got my 9 sites all running in GP with no child themes, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The developer has restored my faith in multi-purpose themes, which when done the right way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best news isI finally have a billion more choices to pick from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal alternative for performance-focused users that want to have the ability to customize and control precisely how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the website that you build will have a fantastic base to make it load fast.
Because Of that, those who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Combination If…
…you Need something which will instantly appear perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you realize you want to produce a fashion blog, you might be happier picking out a market theme that’s developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
While GeneratePress is becoming a great deal simpler to use, thanks to its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you initially install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you want it to, you will almost certainly need to go in and customize things. And while the substantial advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, particularly casual users, do not like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the specific characteristics that clarify why GeneratePress is so popular.
Lots Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Performance, another place where GeneratePress does well is its customization options.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, which is convenient because you’ll be able to see all of the changes that you create in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress provides you adequate options, but should you own GeneratePress Premium, you’ll have the ability to customize pretty much everything about your site.
For Example, if you go in the Design region, you can configure comprehensive settings for your:
- Header — you can move your header around and alter its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can utilize one or two sidebars
- Blog post layout — such as featured image size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like how many widgets to include
Likewise, That the Typography place lets you control the font to get every single element on your website, including buttons:
And You also get a thorough area to control the color of every single element on your site.
All In all, GeneratePress will give you much more customization choices in the WordPress Customizer than most other topics. This amount of detail may be a little overwhelming if you are a beginner. But once you understand how the preferences come together, you will have complete control on how your site appears.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Across All of its attributes, GeneratePress consistently has a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The entire theme is less than 30 kB, and it is about as small as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And some poorly coded topics can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which helps you avoid the render blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Put That collectively, and you get a superfast-loading theme. How quickly? To give you a sense, I ran a small test.
First, I put up an empty site utilizing a haphazard popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After testing its functionality with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That’s Not bad in any way! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on exactly the same test site without altering anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points better
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% fewer
If You perform the exact same test with different themes, you’ll continue to find that GeneratePress is among the fastest-loading WordPress themes in existence. Generatepress Anchor Below Sticky Menu
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more design controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other helpful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature which lets you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a unique page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is sort of like lightweight page construction. It permits you to create separate”sections” on a webpage, each with their own layout and column preferences.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular port where you could pick and choose what characteristics you would like to activate.
That Way, you don’t have to slow down your site for a feature that you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The last, you needed to build GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas no matter what, which made the motif difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the developer added a fresh Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users that allows you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them right from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a couple buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Detailed Control Over Every Bit Of Content
With Most topics, each post and page will use the same settings for the most part. You may have some custom formats or templates — but you don’t have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a new Design meta name box for each and every post and page:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (like changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain components, such as your header, navigation menu, article featured picture, post title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” for your page builder
Where These controls would be the most helpful is if you’re using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you are in a position to produce the proper baseline for your own page builder design, which makes it effortless to create custom content as needed. Generatepress Anchor Below Sticky Menu
GeneratePress Pricing: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress motif is available at no cost at WordPress.org.
That said, If you’re serious about utilizing GeneratePress, I believe you should buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what produces the theme so flexible. The free version doesn’t give you nearly as many configurations in the WordPress Customizer. And you will also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still quite affordable. It costs only $39.95, which gives you use on infinite websites . You will also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to continue receiving support and upgrades following the first year (you can, obviously, continue using GeneratePress following the initial year without beating — you won’t get any more upgrades ).
When You believe that the typical premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a fantastic value.
As I said, I don’t think GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by buying a theme that fits your needs for your niche out of day one.
However, If you’re willing to spend some time changing preferences, then GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any sort of WordPress website. Or, you may even be able to locate a starter site that fits your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It is among those fastest-loading WordPress topics you will locate. Therefore, if you’re looking for the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a great choice.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, so you should have no problem making your site load in under one minute. Generatepress Anchor Below Sticky Menu
