Introduction Free WordPress Themes Sites
Within the previous 10 years, I’ve used a great deal of different WordPress themes and have been really disappointed. Up till recently, I was utilizing MyThemeShop, that was pretty excellent. But I had to perform a great deal of customization to allow it to perform and operate the way I wanted it to. A few of weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the finest WordPress theme I have found in 10 years. I was blown away and am moving all my sites to GeneratePress. I will enter exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review under. And if you’re wondering, yes I have attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to several other lightweight and heavier multicolored themes. Free WordPress Themes Sites
GeneratePress is a totally free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I have really seen it for years from the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I’m pretty picky when it comes to web performance, and so I tend to dismiss everything in the repository. Typically because a lot of things on there isn’t that good, or not supported for long. However, in this case, that was a mistake. The motif currently has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ active installs, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So clearly Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Really set up the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking precisely how I was envisioning a theme should get the job done. And I will go into that more below, but let’s first look at some of the qualities. I’m going to be covering the premium version of the theme, since it’s worth very penny. Actually, Tom, if you ever read this and are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you don’t need running. This is one of the greatest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all devices.
Schema built-in, for greater outcomes in SERPs.
Dramatic integration with the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a fan of the customizer previously, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser service back to IE8.
It also works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these are a terrific combo. I have also read that people using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font awesome built-in.
A lot of hooks and filters that make it great for programmers.
Great active support from the developer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their site, the subject has been around long enough that what I Googled during the setup procedure was found inside a few seconds in their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time for the fun part! I always test a brand new theme right out of the box without any customizations to see how fast the base is. This tells me a lot of what I could expect by the time that I add everything for this. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to produce a lot of big files, but this isn’t the situation. You may tell that Tom actually worked hard on making sure every record loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the number of files is not as important. However, the dimensions is! Take a look at a few of the core GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a developer that cares about performance! And I’ve Seen exactly the same throughout all of the premium add-ons. They are literally as small as possible get them. In fact, Font Awesome is probably the biggest file included. And that is not even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 arriving round the cornerwe can anticipate this to get smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I’d call a modular design. You can activate/deactivate anything you are not using to guarantee they don’t load on your site. As the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin that has a script manager built-in, I felt at home with this. Everything should be made this way.
If You are interested, I’m using the following add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is I no longer need to use a young child theme. This makes my life much simpler. No more editing my functions.php or header.php files. I can literally upgrade my GeneratePress motif this exact minute and not shed one customization. The hooks add-on certainly helps make this possible. It permits you to incorporate custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress website. Free WordPress Themes Sites
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post you have a lot of alternatives. You are able to change the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page involving the default option to a complete width page, as well as disable components.
The WordPress customizer options is where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these options are enabled from the superior add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we would be here daily. But allow me to show you few which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also created by the same developer as GeneratePress. It enables you a super simple way to add responsive columns to any page or post. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid width
Add custom classes
Insert custom inline designs
Equal height columns
Here is An example under:
You May Want to Also grab his amazing WP Show Posts plugin too. See my featured posts on the sidebar of this website? That’s using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a particular”featured” category. You can also get it show past modified/updated articles, recent posts, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works terrific.
The Segments add-in in the premium version of GeneratePress allows you to do all sorts of things in terms of design. Think of it like a page builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not only for blogs! I’m in fact using GeneratePress for our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) that is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to look it over. But as you can see below, it looks like a blog.
For those Of you that are regular readers, you likely did not even notice I changed the entire motif that forces woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme that I had spent a year customizing. Here’s a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop theme was pretty quickly, but I spent a great deal of time customizing it. In reality, I have gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to publish all of my customizations. My advice now is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress theme I managed to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I do not have a kid motif. Each of the customizations were made with the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have running on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he can make a copy of woorkup to your brand new GeneratePress blog library. I’m pleased to let you know that now you can put in my woorkup theme in your GeneratePress site with just a click! It is called the Marketer motif. Get started using a fantastic blog design instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimal site, as I do not use it to get much. As you can see it loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to replicate the whole look 100 percent in GeneratePress in under an hour. And as you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a few plugins that weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our organization site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimal website, as we just use it for our LLC. As you can see it loaded pretty quickly. Free WordPress Themes Sites
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to again move everything over and get it looking just how I wanted it in under one hour. And since you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I managed to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page weight 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I’m moving over all my sites to it (which comprises some EDD e-commerce websites ). After I have my 9 sites all running in GP with no child themes, my entire life will be a breeze! The programmer has restored my faith in multi-purpose subjects , which when done the correct way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best thing is, I now have a thousand more options to choose from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the perfect option for performance-focused users that want to have the ability to customize and control precisely how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the site that you build will have a great base to make it load fast.
Because Of that, people who assemble WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They will typically pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any kind of site.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Combination If…
…you Want something that will instantly appear perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you realize you wish to create a style blog, you might be happier picking out a market theme that is developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
While GeneratePress has gotten a lot simpler to use, thanks to its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones when you initially install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you will most likely will need to go in and customize matters. And though the substantial advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, especially casual users, don’t like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are some of the specific characteristics that clarify why GeneratePress is indeed popular.
Lots Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Functionality, another area where GeneratePress does well is its customization options.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, which is convenient as you’ll be able to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress provides you adequate possibilities, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you’ll have the ability to customize nearly all about your site.
For Example, if you go in the Design region, you can configure detailed settings for your:
- Header — you can move your header around and alter its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can utilize one or two sidebars
- Blog post design — like featured image dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like the number of widgets to include
Similarly, The Typography place lets you control the font to get each and every element on your website, including buttons:
And You also get a thorough region to control the colour of every single element on your site.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will give you much more customization choices in the WordPress Customizer compared to most other themes. This amount of detail may be a bit overwhelming if you’re a newcomer. But as soon as you understand the way the settings come together, you’ll have complete control on how your site looks.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Around All its attributes, GeneratePress always includes a focus on exceptional performance and clean code. The entire motif is less than 30 kB, and it will be about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which helps you avoid the render blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Place That together, and you get a superfast-loading motif. How quickly? To give you a sense, I ran a little test.
First, I set up a vacant website using a haphazard popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That is Not bad in any way! However, GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on exactly the same test site without altering anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance grade of 87, 10 points better
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% fewer
If You do the exact same test with different themes, you’ll continue to find that GeneratePress is among those fastest-loading WordPress themes in life. Free WordPress Themes Sites
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more design controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other useful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature that lets you create custom hooks, page headers, or layout templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a exceptional page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is kind of like lightweight page building. It permits you to create separate”sections” onto a webpage, each with their own design and column preferences.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular interface where you can pick and choose exactly which features you would like to trigger.
That Way, you do not need to slow down your site for a quality that you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The past, you needed to build GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas no matter what, which made the motif difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the developer added a fresh Site Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users that lets you easily import any one of the 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them right from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a couple buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Detailed Control Over Each Bit Of Content
With Most themes, every post and page will use the very same settings for the most part. You might have some custom templates or formats — but you do not have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a brand new Design meta name box for every single post and page:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to use
- Disable certain elements, like your header, navigation menu, post featured image, article title, or footer
- Create a special”container” for your page builder
Where These controls would be the most useful is if you are using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain components, you’re able to create the proper baseline for your own page builder design, which makes it effortless to create custom content as needed. Free WordPress Themes Sites
GeneratePress Pricing: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress theme is available at no cost at WordPress.org.
That said, If you are serious about utilizing GeneratePress, I believe you should purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what produces the theme so flexible. The free version doesn’t give you almost as many configurations in the WordPress Customizer. And you will also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still fairly affordable. It costs only $39.95, which provides you use on infinite sites. You will also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to continue receiving support and upgrades following the initial year (you can, obviously, continue using GeneratePress after the initial year without renewing — you just won’t receive any more updates).
When You believe that the typical premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a fantastic price.
As I said, I don’t think GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by buying a theme that satisfies your needs for your market out of day one.
However, If you are ready to spend time altering settings, GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any sort of WordPress website. Or, you might even have the ability to find a starter site that fulfills your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It is one of the fastest-loading WordPress topics you will locate. So if you’re looking for the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a good choice.
If You blend it with fast-loading hosting, you shouldn’t have any difficulty making your site load in under one minute. Free WordPress Themes Sites
