Intro Fast Theme
Over the past ten years, I’ve used a great deal of different WordPress topics and have been very disappointed. Up till recently, I was utilizing MyThemeShop, which was fairly good. However, I still had to perform a lot of customization to make it do and operate how I needed it to. A couple weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is by far the finest WordPress theme I have discovered in 10 years. I was dismissed and am moving all my sites to GeneratePress. I’ll enter exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review under. And if you’re wondering, yes I’ve tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi in addition to many other lightweight and thicker multicolored themes. Fast Theme
GeneratePress is a totally free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I’ve really seen it for many years from the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I’m fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I have a tendency to ignore everything in the repository. Typically because a lot of stuff on there is not that great, or not encouraged for long. However, in this circumstance, that was a mistake. The theme now has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ active matches, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So obviously Tom is doing something right here.
I Actually set up the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking precisely how I was envisioning a theme should work. And I will go into that more below, but let us first look at a number of the qualities. I’m going to be covering the premium edition of the theme, since it’s worth . In fact, Tom, if you read this and so are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you do not want running. This is one of the greatest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for better outcomes in SERPs.
Impressive integration using the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a lover of this customizer in the past, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser service back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these really are a great combo. I have also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font wonderful built-in.
Tons of hooks and filters which make it great for programmers.
Great active support from the developer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be unbelievable. Besides have great documentation on their site, the theme has been around long enough that what I Googled throughout the setup process was found inside a couple of seconds from their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time for the fun part! I test a new theme right from the box without any customizations to just see how fast the base is. This tells me a great deal of what I can expect by the time that I add everything to it. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to generate a lot of big files, but that isn’t the case. You can tell that Tom literally worked hard on ensuring every file loaded in GeneratePress is as small as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the amount of files is not as important. However, the dimensions is! Take a look at some of the center GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a programmer that cares about functionality! And I have Seen the same during all of the premium add-ons. They are literally as small as possible get them. In fact, Font Awesome is most likely the biggest file contained. And that is not even his. With Font Awesome 5 coming around the corner, we can expect this to get smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I would call a modular layout. You can activate/deactivate whatever you are not using to ensure they don’t load on your website. As the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin which has a script manager built-in, I felt right at home for this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You are interested, I’m using the next add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is that I no more need to use a Child theme. This makes my life much easier. No more editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I can literally update my GeneratePress motif this very minute rather than lose a single customization. The hooks add-on definitely helps make it possible. It allows you to add custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress site. Fast Theme
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post that you have a lot of options. You can change the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page involving the default option to a full width page, as well as disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these choices are permitted by the premium add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we would be here daily. But let me show you few which really come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be made by the exact same developer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super simple way to incorporate responsive columns into any page or post. Features include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid thickness
Insert Customized courses
Insert custom inline designs
Equal height columns
This is An example under:
You might want to Also grab his incredible WP Show Posts plugin too. See my featured posts on the sidebar of this website? That is using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a specific”featured” category. You might also get it show past modified/updated articles, recent articles, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works terrific.
The Segments add-in in the premium version of GeneratePress allows you to perform all kinds of things concerning design. Consider it like a webpage builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not just for blogs! I’m in reality using GeneratePress for our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) that is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to check it out. However, as you can see below, it looks like a blog.
For all those Of you that are regular readers, you probably did not even notice I changed the entire theme that forces woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme which I had spent a year customizing. Here’s a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop theme was already pretty quickly, but I spent a lot of time scrutinizing it. In reality, I’ve gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to print all my customizations. My advice now is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress motif I was able to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I don’t have a kid theme. Each of the customizations were created using the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I’ve running on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he can create a copy of woorkup to your brand new GeneratePress blog library. I am pleased to let you know that now you can put in my woorkup theme in your own GeneratePress website with just a click! It’s known as the Marketer theme. Get started using a fantastic blog design instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimum site, as I don’t use it for much. Since you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to replicate the whole look 100% in GeneratePress in under an hour. And as you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was even able to get rid of a couple plugins that weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our business site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimum website, as we simply use it to our LLC. Since you can see it loaded pretty quickly. Fast Theme
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to move everything over and get it looking exactly how I wanted it in under an hour. And as you can see it loads even faster! Amazing. I managed to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page weight 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I am moving over all my websites to it (which includes some EDD e-commerce websites ). After I have my 9 sites all running in GP without any child themes, my entire life will be a breeze! The programmer has revived my faith in multi-purpose subjects , and that when done the correct way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best thing is, I now have a billion more choices to pick from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal alternative for performance-focused users that wish to be able to customize and control exactly how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the website that you build will have a fantastic base to make it load fast.
Since Of that, those who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any kind of site.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Fit If…
…you Need something which will immediately look perfect from the box.
For Example, if you realize you wish to create a fashion blog, you might be happier choosing a niche theme that is developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress is becoming a lot simpler to use, thanks to its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones when you initially install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you’ll most likely need to go in and personalize matters. And though the significant benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, particularly casual users, do not like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are some of the particular characteristics that explain why GeneratePress is so common.
Lots Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Functionality, another place where GeneratePress does well is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, which can be convenient as you’ll be able to see all of the changes that you make in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress provides you adequate options, but if you own GeneratePress Premium, you will be able to customize nearly all about your site.
For Example, if you go into the Design region, you may configure comprehensive settings to your:
- Header — you can move your header round and change its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can utilize a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post layout — such as featured image size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like the number of widgets to include
Similarly, The Typography place lets you control the font to get every single element on your website, such as buttons:
And You also get a detailed area to control the color of every single element on your site.
All In all, GeneratePress will provide you a lot more customization choices from the WordPress Customizer than most other topics. This level of detail may be a little overwhelming if you are a newcomer. But once you understand how the settings come together, you will have complete control over how your website appears.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Across All of its attributes, GeneratePress consistently includes a focus on exceptional performance and tidy code. The entire motif is less than 30 kB, which is about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded topics can even surpass 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which helps you avoid the leave blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Put That collectively, and you obtain a superfast-loading theme. How fast? To give you a sense, I conducted a little test.
First, I set up a vacant website using a random popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That is Not bad in any way! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on the exact same test site without altering anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance grade of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% fewer
If You do that same test with other themes, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is among those fastest-loading WordPress themes in existence. Fast Theme
Other Useful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more design controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature which lets you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a unique page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is sort of like lightweight page building. It lets you create separate”sections” onto a page, each with their own design and column preferences.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular interface where you can select and choose what characteristics you would like to trigger.
That Way, you do not have to slow down your site for a quality that you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The last, you needed to construct GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which left the motif difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, however, the developer added a new Website Library feature for GeneratePress Premium users that lets you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them right from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a few buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Detailed Control Over Each Piece Of Content
With Most themes, every page and post will use the same settings for the most part. You may have some custom templates or formats — but you do not have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a brand new Layout meta box for every single page and post:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (like altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to use
- Disable certain elements, such as your header, navigation menu, post featured image, article title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” for your page builder
Where These controls are the most helpful is if you’re using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you’re able to create the proper baseline for your own page builder design, making it effortless to create custom content as needed. Fast Theme
GeneratePress Pricing: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress theme is available at no cost at WordPress.org.
That said, If you are serious about using GeneratePress, I believe you should buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what produces the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you nearly as numerous configurations from the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still quite reasonably priced. It costs just $39.95, which gives you use on unlimited sites. You will also get a 40% discount if you want to renew to keep on receiving support and upgrades after the first year (you can, obviously, keep using GeneratePress following the first year without beating — you won’t get any more upgrades ).
When You consider the normal premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a fantastic value.
As I mentioned, I don’t believe GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by buying a theme that satisfies your needs for your niche from day one.
However, If you are ready to spend some time changing preferences, then GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any type of WordPress website. Or, you may even have the ability to find a starter site that fulfills your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It is one of those fastest-loading WordPress themes that you will find. Therefore, if you’re seeking the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a great choice.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, so you shouldn’t have any problem making your site load in under one second. Fast Theme
