Introduction Cool WordPress Templates
Over the previous ten years, I have used a lot of different WordPress themes and have been really disappointed. Up till recently, I had been using MyThemeShop, which was pretty good. But I still had to do a lot of customization to make it do and operate how I wanted it to. A few weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the finest WordPress theme I’ve found in a decade . I had been dismissed and am now moving all of my sites to GeneratePress. I will go into exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review under. And if you are wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi as well as several other lightweight and heavier multicolored themes. Cool WordPress Templates
GeneratePress is a totally free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I have really seen it for years in the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I’m fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I tend to dismiss everything in the repository. Typically because a lot of things on there isn’t that good, or not encouraged for long. However, in this case, this was a mistake. The theme currently has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy installs, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So clearly Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Actually installed the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking precisely how I was imagining a theme should get the job done. And I will go into that more below, but let’s first look at a number of the qualities. I’m going to be covering the premium version of the theme, since it’s worth very penny. Actually, Tom, if you read this and so are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you don’t need running. This is one of the biggest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration with all the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a lover of the customizer previously, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with all popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser support back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you want to dive into even more customizations, these are a terrific combo. I’ve also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font wonderful built in.
A lot of hooks and filters that make it good for programmers.
Excellent active service from the developer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also unbelievable. Besides have great documentation on their website, the subject has been around long enough that everything I wholeheartedly throughout the setup process was found inside a few seconds in their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time for the fun part! I always test a new theme right from the box without any customizations to just see how fast the base is. This tells me a lot of what I can expect by the time I add everything to it. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular design was going to produce a lot of big files, but this is not the situation. You may tell that Tom literally worked hard on ensuring that every file loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the number of documents is not as important. But the dimensions is! Take a peek at some of the core GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a developer that cares about performance! And I’ve Seen exactly the same throughout all of the premium add-ons. They’re as small as you can possibly get them. In fact, Font Awesome is probably the largest file included. And that is not even his. With Font Awesome 5 arriving round the cornerwe could expect that to secure smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I’d call a modular layout. You can activate/deactivate anything you aren’t using to ensure they don’t load on your website. Since the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin which has a script supervisor built-in, I felt at home for this. Everything ought to be made this way.
If You’re interested, I am using the following add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is that I no more need to use a young child motif . This makes my life much easier. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I will literally upgrade my GeneratePress theme this exact moment rather than shed one customization. The hooks add-on definitely helps make it possible. It allows you to incorporate custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress website. Cool WordPress Templates
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post you have a lot of alternatives. You are able to alter the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page involving the default option to a full width page, in addition to disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Remember, a lot of these options are permitted by the premium add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. But let me show you few which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be created by precisely the exact same developer as GeneratePress. It enables you a super simple way to add responsive columns into any page or post. Features include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid width
Add custom courses
Insert custom inline styles
Equal height columns
Here is An example below:
You May Want to Also grab his amazing WP Display Posts plugin also. See my featured posts on the sidebar of this website? That’s using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to show posts from a particular”featured” category. You might also get it show last modified/updated articles, recent articles, etc.. I am using the free version and it works terrific.
The Sections add-on in the premium version of GeneratePress allows you to perform all sorts of things in terms of design. Consider it like a webpage builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not only for blogs! I’m in reality using GeneratePress for our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) which is running Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks nothing like a blog.
For all those Of you who are regular readers, you probably didn’t even notice I changed the entire motif that forces woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif that I had spent a year customizing. Here is a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop motif was pretty quickly, but I spent a lot of time scrutinizing it. In fact, I’ve gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to publish all of my customizations. My advice now is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress theme I managed to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I do not have a kid theme. Each of the customizations were created with the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have running on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he could create a copy of woorkup for the new GeneratePress blog library. I’m pleased to allow you to know that now you can put in my woorkup theme in your own GeneratePress site with only a click! It’s known as the Marketer motif. Get started using a great blog layout immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over my personal site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimum website, since I don’t use it to get much. As you can see it loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to replicate the whole appearance 100 percent in GeneratePress in under an hour. And as you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a couple plugins which weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our business site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimum site, as we just use it to our LLC. As you can see it already loaded pretty quickly. Cool WordPress Templates
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to again move everything over and get it looking exactly how I needed it in under one hour. And as you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page burden 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I’m moving over all of my sites for this (which comprises some EDD e-commerce websites ). After I have my 9 websites all running in GP without any child topics, my entire life will be a breeze! The developer has restored my faith in multi-purpose subjects , which when done the correct way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best thing is, I now have a thousand more choices to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal alternative for performance-focused users who want to be able to customize and control precisely how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the website that you build will have a fantastic base to make it load quickly.
Since Of that, those who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They will normally pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any kind of site.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Combination If…
…you Want something that will immediately appear perfect from the box.
For Example, if you realize you wish to create a fashion blog, you might be happier picking out a market theme that is developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
While GeneratePress has gotten a lot easier to use, thanks to its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones if you initially install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you’ll most likely will need to go in and customize things. And while the substantial advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, particularly casual users, do not like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the particular features that clarify why GeneratePress is indeed common.
Lots Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Functionality, another area where GeneratePress does well is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, which is convenient because you will be able to see all of the changes that you make in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress gives you adequate possibilities, but should you have GeneratePress Premium, you’ll be able to customize nearly all about your website.
For Example, if you go in the Design area, you may configure comprehensive settings for yourown:
- Header — you can move your header around and change its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can use a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post design — such as featured image dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like the number of widgets to add
Similarly, The Typography place lets you control the font to get each and every element on your site, such as buttons:
And You also receive a thorough region to control the colour of each and every element on your website.
All In all, GeneratePress will give you a lot more customization options in the WordPress Customizer than most other themes. This level of detail may be a little overwhelming if you are a newcomer. But once you understand how the settings come together, you’ll have full control on how your site looks.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Around All of its attributes, GeneratePress consistently has a focus on exceptional performance and clean code. The entire theme is less than 30 kB, which will be about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And some poorly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which helps you avoid the render blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Place That collectively, and you obtain a superfast-loading theme. How fast? To give you a sense, I conducted a little test.
First, I put up a vacant website utilizing a haphazard popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That is Not bad in any way! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on the same test site without changing anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% less
If You perform that same test with other topics, you’ll continue to see that GeneratePress is among the fastest-loading WordPress themes in life. Cool WordPress Templates
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Past Giving you more design controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature which lets you create customized hooks, page headers, or layout templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a exceptional page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is sort of like lightweight page construction. It permits you to create separate”sections” on a page, each with their own design and column settings.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular port where you could select and choose what features you want to activate.
That Way, you do not need to slow your site down for a quality which you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The past, you had to construct GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which made the motif difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, however, the developer added a new Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users which lets you easily import any among the 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them directly from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a couple buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Detailed Control Over Each Bit Of Content
With Most topics, every post and page will use the same configurations for the most part. You might have some custom formats or templates — however you don’t have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a new Layout meta name box for every single post and page:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain components, such as your header, navigation menu, article featured picture, article title, or footer
- Create a special”container” to your own page builder
Where These controls are the most helpful is if you’re using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain components, you are in a position to create the proper baseline for your own page builder design, making it effortless to create custom content as needed. Cool WordPress Templates
GeneratePress Pricing: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress theme is available for free at WordPress.org.
That said, If you’re serious about using GeneratePress, I believe you need to purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what makes the theme so flexible. The free version does not give you almost as many configurations from the WordPress Customizer. And you will also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still quite affordable. It costs just $39.95, and that provides you use on unlimited sites. You’ll also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to continue receiving support and upgrades following the initial year (you can, obviously, continue using GeneratePress following the initial year without beating — you won’t receive any more upgrades ).
When You believe that the normal premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a fantastic value.
As I said, I do not believe GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You want a niche-specific theme, you can probably save time by buying a theme that fits your requirements for your niche out of day one.
However, If you’re ready to spend time altering preferences, then GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any sort of WordPress site. Or, you may even be able to find a starter site that fulfills your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It’s one of those fastest-loading WordPress topics you will find. So if you’re looking for the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a great decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, so you shouldn’t have any problem making your website load in under one minute. Cool WordPress Templates
