Introduction Best WordPress Themes Magazine Free
Over the past 10 decades, I have used a lot of different WordPress themes and have been really disappointed. Up till recently, I was using MyThemeShop, which was pretty excellent. However, I had to perform a lot of customization to make it perform and work how I wanted it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the best WordPress theme I have found in 10 years. I was dismissed and am moving all of my sites to GeneratePress. I will go into precisely why in my in-depth GeneratePress review under. And if you’re wondering, yes I’ve tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to many other lightweight and heavier multicolored themes. Best WordPress Themes Magazine Free
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for many years in the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I’m fairly picky when it comes to web performance, and so I tend to dismiss everything from the repository. Typically because a lot of stuff on there isn’t that great, or not supported for long. However, in this case, this was a mistake. The theme currently has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy matches, with over 500 5-star ratings. So clearly Tom is doing something right here.
I Actually installed the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes purchased the superior version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking exactly how I was imagining a theme should work. And I’ll go into that more below, but let’s first look at some of the features. I’m going to be covering the superior edition of the subject, because it’s worth very penny. Actually, Tom, in the event that you read this and so are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you don’t want running. This is only one of the greatest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all devices.
Schema built-in, for better outcomes in SERPs.
Dramatic integration using the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a lover of this customizer previously, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser support back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a terrific combo. I’ve also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font awesome built in.
Tons of filters and hooks which make it good for developers.
Excellent active service from the developer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their website, the subject has existed long enough that everything I wholeheartedly during the setup procedure was found inside a couple of seconds from their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time to the fun part! I always test a brand new theme right out of the box with no customizations to see how quickly the foundation is. This tells me a lot of what I can expect by the time that I add everything to it. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to produce a whole lot of big files, but that isn’t the situation. You can tell that Tom actually worked hard on making sure that every file loaded in GeneratePress is as small as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the amount of documents isn’t as important. But the size is! Have a peek at a few of the center GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a developer that cares about performance! And I’ve Seen the same during each the premium add-ons. They’re literally as small as possible get them. In fact, Font Awesome is probably the largest file contained. And that isn’t even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 coming round the cornerwe can expect this to secure smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I’d call a modular design. You can activate/deactivate anything you aren’t using to ensure they don’t load on your site. As the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin which has a script manager built, I felt at home for this. Everything ought to be made this way.
If You’re curious, I am using the next add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is I no longer have to use a young child theme. This makes my life much simpler. No more editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I will literally upgrade my GeneratePress theme this exact moment rather than lose a single customization. The hooks add-on definitely can help make it possible. It permits you to incorporate custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress website. Best WordPress Themes Magazine Free
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post that you have a great deal of options. You are able to alter the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page involving the default to a complete width page, in addition to disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, a lot of these options are permitted from the superior add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we would be here all day. But allow me to show you few which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be created by the exact same developer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to add responsive columns to any page or article. Features include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid thickness
Insert Customized courses
Insert custom inline designs
Equal height columns
This is An example under:
You might want to Also grab his incredible WP Show Posts plugin also. See my featured articles on the sidebar of this site? That is using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a particular”featured” category. You might also have it show last modified/updated articles, recent posts, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works great.
The Segments add-in in the premium version of GeneratePress lets you do all kinds of things concerning design. Think of it like a webpage builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is definitely not just for blogs! I’m in fact using GeneratePress for our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) which is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks like a blog.
For those Of you that are regular readers, you probably did not even notice I changed the whole motif that forces woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop theme which I had spent a year customizing. Here’s a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop motif was already pretty quickly, but I spent a lot of time customizing it. In fact, I’ve gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to print all my customizations. My advice today is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress theme I was able to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I do not have a kid motif. Each of the customizations were made using the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have running on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he can make a copy of woorkup to your new GeneratePress blog library. I am pleased to let you know that you can now install my woorkup theme in your GeneratePress website with just a click! It is known as the Marketer motif. Get started with a fantastic blog layout immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimal site, since I do not use it for much. Since you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to replicate the whole appearance 100% in GeneratePress in under one hour. And as you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I was even able to get rid of a few plugins which weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our business site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimum website, as we simply use it for our LLC. Since you can see it loaded pretty fast. Best WordPress Themes Magazine Free
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to again move everything over and get it looking just how I wanted it in under one hour. And as you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I managed to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page weight 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I’m moving over all of my websites for this (which includes some EDD e-commerce sites). Once I’ve got my 9 sites all running in GP without any child topics, my life is going to be a breeze! The programmer has restored my faith in multi-purpose themes, and that when done the right way, can actually perform faster.
And The best thing is, I now have a thousand more choices to pick from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the perfect alternative for performance-focused users that want to be able to personalize and control exactly how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the website that you build will have a great foundation to make it load quickly.
Since Of that, people who assemble WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They will normally pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any kind of site.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Combination If…
…you Need something that will instantly appear perfect from the box.
For Example, if you know you wish to create a style blog, you might be happier choosing a market theme that’s developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
While GeneratePress has gotten a lot easier to use, thanks to its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones if you initially install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you’ll most likely need to go in and customize things. And while the significant benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, particularly casual users, don’t like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features That Make It Unique
Here Are some of the specific characteristics that clarify why GeneratePress is indeed common.
Plenty Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Functionality, another area where GeneratePress does well is its customization options.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, which can be convenient because you’ll be able to see all of the changes that you create in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress provides you decent possibilities, but if you own GeneratePress Premium, you will have the ability to customize pretty much everything about your site.
For Example, if you go in the Design area, you may configure comprehensive settings for yourown:
- Header — you can move your header around and alter its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can utilize one or two sidebars
- Blog post design — such as featured picture dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like the number of widgets to add
Similarly, That the Typography place enables you to control the font for each and every element on your website, such as buttons:
And You also receive a thorough region to control the color of every single element on your website.
All In all, GeneratePress will give you a lot more customization options in the WordPress Customizer than most other topics. This level of detail might be a bit overwhelming if you’re a newcomer. But as soon as you understand the way the settings come together, you will have complete control over how your website appears.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Around All of its features, GeneratePress consistently has a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The whole theme is less than 30 kB, which will be about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which will help you avoid the render obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Place That together, and you obtain a superfast-loading theme. How quickly? To give you a sense, I ran a small test.
First, I put up a vacant website utilizing a haphazard popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After analyzing its functionality with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That is Not bad at all! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on exactly the exact same test site without altering anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 requests, ~40% less
If You perform the exact same test with other topics, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is among the fastest-loading WordPress themes in existence. Best WordPress Themes Magazine Free
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Past Giving you more style controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other useful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature which lets you create custom hooks, page headers, or layout templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a unique page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is sort of like lightweight page building. It lets you create separate”sections” on a page, each with their own design and column preferences.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular port where you could select and choose what features you would like to trigger.
That Way, you do not need to slow your site down for a quality that you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The last, you needed to build GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas no matter what, which left the theme difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, though, the programmer added a new Site Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users that allows you easily import any one of the 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them right from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a few buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Comprehensive Control Over Each Bit Of Content
With Most themes, every page and post will use the very same settings for the most part. You may have some custom templates or formats — however you do not have very much control beyond that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a new Layout meta box for every single post and page:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (like altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain elements, like your header, navigation menu, article featured image, article title, or footer
- Create a special”container” for your page builder
Where These controls would be the most helpful is if you are using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain components, you’re in a position to produce the correct baseline for your own page builder design, which makes it easy to create custom content as needed. Best WordPress Themes Magazine Free
GeneratePress Pricing: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress motif can be obtained for free at WordPress.org.
That said, If you’re serious about using GeneratePress, I believe you need to purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what produces the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you almost as numerous configurations from the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still fairly affordable. It costs only $39.95, which provides you use on infinite sites. You will also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to continue receiving support and updates after the first year (you can, obviously, continue using GeneratePress after the first year without beating — you won’t get any more upgrades ).
When You believe that the typical premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a great value.
As I mentioned, I do not believe GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You desire a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that satisfies your requirements for your market from day one.
But If you are willing to spend some time altering preferences, then GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any type of WordPress website. Or, you might even be able to locate a starter website that fits your needs to save a little time.
Additionally, It is one of those fastest-loading WordPress themes you will locate. So if you’re looking for the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a good choice.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, you should have no problem making your website load in under one minute. Best WordPress Themes Magazine Free
