Intro Best WordPress Theme Directory
Over the previous ten decades, I’ve used a lot of different WordPress themes and have been very disappointed. Up till recently, I had been using MyThemeShop, which was fairly excellent. But I had to perform a lot of customization to make it perform and work the way I wanted it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is by far the best WordPress theme I have found in 10 years. I was dismissed and am moving all of my websites to GeneratePress. I will go into precisely why in my in-depth GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I’ve attempted Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi in addition to several other lightweight and heavier multicolored themes. Best WordPress Theme Directory
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I’ve actually seen it for years from the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I’m pretty picky when it comes to web performance, and so I tend to dismiss everything in the repository. Typically because a lot of things on there is not that great, or not supported for long. However, in this case, this was a mistake. The motif currently has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy matches, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So clearly Tom is doing something right here.
I Actually set up the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking exactly how I was imagining a theme should get the job done. And I will go into that more below, but let’s first look at a number of the qualities. I’m going to be covering the premium edition of the subject, because it’s worth very penny. Actually, Tom, if you ever read this and so are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable things you do not need running. This is only one of the biggest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Impressive integration with all the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a lover of the customizer in the past, but Tom does it correctly.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser service back to IE8.
It also works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I have also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font wonderful built-in.
A lot of filters and hooks that make it good for programmers.
Great active service from the developer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also unbelievable. Besides have great documentation on their site, the subject has existed long enough that everything I Googled during the setup procedure was found inside a few seconds from their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it is Time to the fun part! I test a brand new theme right out of the box without any customizations to see how fast the foundation is. This tells me a great deal of what I could expect by the time I add everything to it. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to generate a whole lot of big files, but that is not the situation. You may tell that Tom actually worked hard on ensuring every file packed in GeneratePress is as little as possible. With HTTP/2, the number of files is not as important. But the dimensions is! Take a look at some of the center GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a developer that cares about functionality! And I’ve Seen the same during each of the premium add-ons. They’re as small as possible get them. In reality, Font Awesome is probably the largest file included. And that is not even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 coming around the cornerwe could expect this to secure smaller also.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I would call a modular design. It is possible to activate/deactivate anything you aren’t using to guarantee they don’t load on your site. As the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin that has a script manager built-in, I felt right at home with this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You are interested, I’m using the next add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is that I no more have to use a young child motif . This makes my life so much simpler. No more editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I can literally update my GeneratePress theme this exact minute and not shed a single customization. The hooks add-on certainly can help make this possible. It permits you to add custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress site. Best WordPress Theme Directory
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post that you have a lot of alternatives. You can change the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can easily swap a page between the default option to a full width page, in addition to disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, a lot of these choices are permitted from the superior add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here all day. However, allow me to show you couple which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also created by precisely the same programmer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to incorporate responsive columns to any page or article. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid width
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid width
Add custom courses
Add custom inline designs
Equal height columns
Here is An example below:
You might want to Also catch his incredible WP Show Posts plugin too. View my featured articles on the sidebar of this website? That is using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a specific”featured” category. You might also have it show past modified/updated articles, recent posts, etc.. I am using the free version and it works great.
The Sections add-on in the premium edition of GeneratePress allows you to perform all sorts of things concerning design. Consider it like a page builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not just for blogs! I am in reality using GeneratePress for our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) which is running Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to look it over. But as you can see below, it looks nothing like a site.
For those Of you that are regular readers, you likely didn’t even notice I changed the entire theme that powers woorkup.com. It only took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif which I had spent annually customizing. Here is a comparison under.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop theme was pretty fast, but I spent a lot of time scrutinizing it. In reality, I’ve gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to publish all my customizations. My advice now is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress theme I was able to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I don’t have a kid motif. All the customizations were created using the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have running on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he can create a replica of woorkup to your brand new GeneratePress site library. I’m happy to let you know that now you can put in my woorkup theme on your own GeneratePress site with just a click! It’s called the Marketer motif. Get started with a fantastic blog layout immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved within my personal site, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimal website, since I do not use it to get much. Since you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to duplicate the whole look 100% in GeneratePress in under an hour. And since you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was even able to get rid of a couple plugins which weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our organization website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimum site, as we simply use it for our LLC. As you can see it already loaded pretty fast. Best WordPress Theme Directory
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to again move everything over and get it looking just how I wanted it in under one hour. And since you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I managed to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page burden 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I am moving over all my sites for this (which includes some EDD e-commerce sites). After I have my 9 sites all running in GP with no child themes, my life will be a breeze! The programmer has restored my faith in multi-purpose themes, and that when done the correct way, can actually perform faster.
And The best news isI finally have a thousand more options to choose from than I did before.
What GeneratePress Is Great For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal alternative for performance-focused users who want to have the ability to personalize and control exactly how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the website that you build will have a fantastic base to make it load fast.
Because Of that, those who build WordPress sites for a living love GeneratePress. They will typically pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any type of site.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Combination If…
…you Need something that will immediately appear perfect from the box.
For Example, if you realize you want to create a fashion blog, you might be happier choosing a market theme that is developed exclusively for fashion bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress has gotten a lot easier to use, thanks to its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still looks very barebones when you first install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you would like it to, you will most likely need to go in and personalize matters. And though the significant advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, especially casual users, do not like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the specific characteristics that explain why GeneratePress is indeed popular.
Lots Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Performance, another area where GeneratePress does well is its customization options.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, and this can be convenient because you will be able to see all of the changes that you make in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress provides you decent options, but if you own GeneratePress Premium, you’ll be able to customize nearly all about your website.
For Example, if you go in the Design area, you can configure detailed settings for yourown:
- Header — you can move your header round and change its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can use a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post design — like featured picture size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like the number of widgets to add
Likewise, That the Typography area lets you control the font to get each and every element on your website, such as buttons:
And You also receive a detailed region to control the color of every single element on your site.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will give you a lot more customization choices in the WordPress Customizer than most other themes. This amount of detail may be a bit overwhelming if you’re a newcomer. But once you understand how the preferences come together, you’ll have complete control over how your site looks.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Around All of its attributes, GeneratePress consistently includes a focus on excellent performance and clean code. The whole theme is less than 30 kB, which will be about as small as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And some badly coded topics can even surpass 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which helps you avoid the leave blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Put That together, and you get a superfast-loading motif. How fast? To give you an idea, I conducted a small test.
First, I set up a vacant website using a random popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That is Not bad at all! However, GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on exactly the same test site without changing anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points better
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% less
If You perform the exact same test with other themes, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is one of those fastest-loading WordPress topics in life. Best WordPress Theme Directory
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Beyond Giving you more design controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium comes with a lot of other helpful features such as:
- Elements — a unique feature which allows you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a exceptional page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — that is kind of like lightweight page construction. It permits you to create separate”sections” on a webpage, each with their own layout and column settings.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular interface where you can select and choose what features you want to activate.
That Way, you don’t have to slow down your site for a feature that you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The last, you had to construct GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which left the theme difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, however, the developer added a new Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users which lets you easily import any among the 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them directly from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a few buttons to import a presentation site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Detailed Control Over Each Bit Of Content
With Most topics, each page and post will use the same configurations for the most part. You might have some custom formats or templates — however you don’t have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a new Design meta name box for each and every page and post:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to utilize
- Disable certain components, such as your header, navigation menu, post featured picture, article title, or footer
- Create a special”container” for your page builder
Where These controls are the most helpful is if you are using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain components, you are able to produce the correct baseline for your own page builder layout, making it effortless to create custom articles as needed. Best WordPress Theme Directory
GeneratePress Pricing: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Core GeneratePress motif can be obtained for free at WordPress.org.
That said, If you’re serious about utilizing GeneratePress, I believe you should buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what produces the theme so flexible. The free version does not give you almost as many configurations in the WordPress Customizer. And you will also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still quite reasonably priced. It costs only $39.95, and that provides you use on unlimited websites . You’ll also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to keep on receiving support and updates following the initial year (you can, of course, continue using GeneratePress following the first year without beating — you won’t get any more upgrades ).
When You consider that the normal premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a fantastic value.
As I mentioned, I don’t think GeneratePress is for everyone.
If You want a niche-specific theme, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that satisfies your needs for your market from day one.
However, If you’re ready to spend some time changing preferences, then GeneratePress’ mode controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any sort of WordPress site. Or, you may even have the ability to locate a starter website that fits your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It is among the fastest-loading WordPress themes you will locate. So if you’re seeking the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a great choice.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, you should have no difficulty making your site load in under one minute. Best WordPress Theme Directory
