Intro Best Template WordPress Blog
Over the previous ten decades, I’ve used a great deal of different WordPress themes and have been really disappointed. Up until recently, I was utilizing MyThemeShop, which was pretty excellent. However, I had to do a lot of customization to allow it to do and work how I wanted it to. A couple of weeks ago I decided to provide GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it is by far the best WordPress theme I’ve discovered in a decade . I was blown away and am now moving all of my websites to GeneratePress. I will enter exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X motif, Divi in addition to many other lightweight and heavier multi-purpose themes. Best Template WordPress Blog
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme made by Tom Usborne, a programmer from Canada. I’ve really seen it for many years in the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I am pretty picky when it comes to web performance, so I tend to ignore everything from the repository. Typically because a great deal of things on there isn’t that good, or not supported for long. Nonetheless, in this case, that was a mistake. The motif currently has over half a million downloads, 80,000+ active matches, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So obviously Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Actually set up the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking precisely how I was envisioning a theme should get the job done. And I will go into that more below, but let’s first look at some of the features. I will be covering the superior edition of the theme, because it’s worth very penny. In fact, Tom, if you ever read this and are visiting Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and fast. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you don’t need running. This is only one of the greatest reasons I love GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Impressive integration with the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a fan of this customizer in the past, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser service back to IE8.
It also works great with the favorite fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these really are a great combo. I have also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have experienced success.
Font wonderful built-in.
Tons of hooks and filters which make it great for developers.
Great active service from the developer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation can be unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their website, the theme has been around long enough that what I Googled during the setup process was found within a couple of seconds in their forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time to the fun part! I always test a new theme right out of the box with no customizations to see how quickly the base is. This tells me a lot of what I could expect by the time I add everything to it. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to produce a lot of big files, but this is not the situation. You may tell that Tom actually worked hard on ensuring every file loaded in GeneratePress is as little as possible. Together with HTTP/2, the amount of documents isn’t as significant. However, the dimensions is! Have a look at a few of the center GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
This is a programmer that cares about performance! And I’ve Seen exactly the same throughout each the premium add-ons. They are literally as small as possible get them. In reality, Font Awesome is probably the largest file included. And that is not even his. With Font Awesome 5 arriving around the corner, we could expect this to secure smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I’d call a modular design. You can activate/deactivate whatever you aren’t using to ensure they do not load on your site. Since the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin which has a script manager built-in, I felt right at home with this. Everything should be designed this way.
If You are interested, I am using the next add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best characteristics of GeneratePress is I no longer have to use a young child motif . This makes my life so much simpler. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php files. I can literally upgrade my GeneratePress motif this very minute and not lose a single customization. The hooks add-on definitely can help make it possible. It allows you to add custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress website. Best Template WordPress Blog
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post that you have a lot of options. You can alter the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page between the default option to a full width page, as well as disable components.
The WordPress customizer options is really where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these options are permitted by the superior add-ons. I can not show you everything, otherwise, we’d be here daily. But let me show you couple which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly suggest grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also made by the same programmer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super easy way to incorporate responsive columns to any page or article. Characteristics include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid thickness
Add Customized classes
Insert custom inline styles
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You might want to Also catch his incredible WP Show Posts plugin also. See my featured posts on the sidebar of this website? That is using the WP Show Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a specific”featured” category. You can also have it show past modified/updated articles, recent posts, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works terrific.
The Segments add-in in the premium edition of GeneratePress lets you do all sorts of things in terms of design. Think of it like a webpage builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not just for blogs! I am in reality utilizing GeneratePress for our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) that is operating Easy Digital Downloads. Don’t hesitate to look it over. However, as you can see below, it looks nothing like a site.
For those Of those that are regular readers, you probably didn’t even notice that I changed the whole motif that forces woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif that I had spent annually customizing. Here is a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My older MyThemeShop motif was already pretty quickly, but I spent a lot of time customizing it. In fact, I’ve gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to print all of my customizations. My advice now is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
Together with the New GeneratePress motif I was able to attain faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I do not have a kid theme. Each of the customizations were made using the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have working on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he could create a copy of woorkup for the new GeneratePress blog library. I’m pleased to allow you to know that now you can install my woorkup theme on your own GeneratePress website with only a click! It’s called the Marketer motif. Get started with a great blog layout immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimal website, since I do not use it for much. Since you can see it already loaded pretty fast.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to replicate the whole look 100% in GeneratePress in under one hour. And as you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a few plugins that weren’t needed due to GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our organization website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a motif from Array Themes. It’s a pretty basic minimum site, as we just use it to our LLC. Since you can see it loaded pretty quickly. Best Template WordPress Blog
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to again move everything over and get it looking just how I needed it in under an hour. And since you can see it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page burden 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I am moving over all of my sites to it (which includes several EDD e-commerce sites). Once I have my 9 websites all running in GP without any child themes, my life will be a breeze! The programmer has revived my faith in multi-purpose themes, and that when done the right way, can actually perform faster.
And The best thing is, I finally have a billion more choices to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal option for performance-focused users who wish to have the ability to personalize and control exactly how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on performance, the website that you build will have a fantastic foundation to make it load quickly.
Because Of that, people who assemble WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress site builder and use it for literally any type of website.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Combination If…
…you Need something that will instantly appear perfect from the box.
For Example, if you know you want to create a fashion blog, you might be happier choosing a market theme that’s developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
While GeneratePress is becoming a lot simpler to use, thanks to its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones if you first install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you want it to, you’ll almost certainly will need to go in and personalize things. And while the significant benefit of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, particularly casual users, do not like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the specific characteristics that explain why GeneratePress is indeed popular.
Plenty Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Performance, another area where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Uses the WordPress Customizer for customization, which can be convenient as you will have the ability to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free version of GeneratePress provides you adequate possibilities, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you will have the ability to customize pretty much all about your website.
For Example, if you go into the Layout area, you can configure comprehensive settings to your:
- Header — you can move your header round and alter its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, including sticky menus
- Sidebar layout — you can use a Couple of sidebars
- Blog post layout — such as featured image size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — like the number of widgets to add
Similarly, The Typography area lets you control the font to get every single element on your site, including buttons:
And You also receive a thorough area to control the color of every single element on your site.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will give you a lot more customization choices in the WordPress Customizer compared to most other topics. This level of detail may be a bit overwhelming if you’re a beginner. But once you realize the way the preferences come together, you’ll have complete control on how your website appears.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Around All of its attributes, GeneratePress consistently has a focus on exceptional performance and tidy code. The entire theme is less than 30 kB, which is about as little as you’ll ever find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress themes are still 200+ kB. And a few poorly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also has no code dependencies, which will help you avoid the render blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Put That collectively, and you obtain a superfast-loading motif. How quickly? To give you an idea, I ran a little test.
First, I put up a vacant site utilizing a haphazard popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After testing its performance with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 asks
That’s Not bad in any way! However, GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I triggered GeneratePress on the same test website without changing anything else. Here is how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance grade of 87, 10 points better
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% fewer
If You perform the exact same test with different topics, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is among those fastest-loading WordPress themes in life. Best Template WordPress Blog
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Past Giving you more style controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other useful features like:
- Elements — a unique feature that lets you create custom hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — lets you create a exceptional page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is sort of like lightweight page construction. It permits you to create separate”sections” on a page, each with their own design and column preferences.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular port where you can select and choose exactly which features you would like to trigger.
That Way, you don’t have to slow down your site for a quality which you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The past, you needed to construct GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas regardless of what, which made the motif difficult for casual users to install.
Earlier In 2018, however, the programmer added a new Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users which allows you easily import any one of the 25+ pre-built demonstration websites .
You Can import them right from the WordPress dashboard.
Yes this Website still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a few buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Comprehensive Control Over Each Piece Of Content
With Most topics, each post and page will use the same configurations for the most part. You might have some custom templates or formats — but you don’t have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by providing you a new Layout meta box for every single page and post:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your website uses, or the sidebar orientation (like altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to use
- Disable certain components, like your header, navigation menu, article featured image, article title, or footer
- Create a special”container” for your page builder
Where These controls would be the most useful is if you’re using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain components, you’re in a position to produce the proper baseline for your page builder design, which makes it easy to create custom content as needed. Best Template WordPress Blog
GeneratePress Replies: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress motif can be obtained at no cost at WordPress.org.
Nevertheless, If you’re serious about using GeneratePress, I feel you should purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what produces the theme so flexible. The free version doesn’t give you nearly as many settings from the WordPress Customizer. And you will also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still quite reasonably priced. It costs just $39.95, which gives you use on unlimited websites . You will also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to keep on receiving support and updates following the initial year (you can, obviously, keep using GeneratePress after the initial year without beating — you won’t receive any more updates).
When You believe the normal premium WordPress theme will often cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a fantastic value.
As I mentioned, I don’t believe GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by buying a theme that fits your needs for your market out of day one.
However, If you’re ready to spend some time altering settings, GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any type of WordPress site. Or, you may even have the ability to find a starter site that fits your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It is among those fastest-loading WordPress topics that you will locate. Therefore, if you’re seeking the best performance possible, using GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s foundation is a great choice.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, you shouldn’t have any difficulty making your website load in under one second. Best Template WordPress Blog
