Intro Best Modern WordPress Themes
Over the previous 10 years, I have used a great deal of different WordPress topics and have been really disappointed. Up till recently, I had been utilizing MyThemeShop, that was pretty good. But I still had to do a great deal of customization to allow it to perform and operate the way I needed it to. A few of weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the best WordPress theme I’ve discovered in 10 years. I was dismissed and am moving all my sites to GeneratePress. I will go into exactly why in my comprehensive GeneratePress review below. And if you’re wondering, yes I’ve tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to several other lightweight and heavier multicolored themes. Best Modern WordPress Themes
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I’ve really seen it for years from the WordPress repository. Most of you realize that I am fairly picky when it comes to web performance, so I tend to dismiss everything from the repository. Typically because a great deal of stuff on there isn’t that great, or not encouraged for long. However, in this case, this was a mistake. The theme currently has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ busy matches, with over 500 5-star ratings. So obviously Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Actually installed the free version of the theme and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the developer was thinking exactly how I was imagining a theme should work. And I will go into that more below, but let us first look at a number of the qualities. I’m going to be covering the superior edition of the theme, because it’s worth very penny. Actually, Tom, if you read this and are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, java on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you don’t want running. This is only one of the biggest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks great across all of the devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration using the WordPress Customizer. I haven’t been a lover of the customizer previously, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Great browser support back to IE8.
It also works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I’ve also read that individuals using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font awesome built-in.
A lot of filters and hooks which make it good for developers.
Great active support from the developer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their website, the subject has been around long enough that everything I wholeheartedly during the setup procedure was found within a couple of seconds from their own forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time for the fun part! I test a new theme right from the box with no customizations to see how quickly the base is. This tells me a great deal of what I could expect by the time that I add everything for this. Running the stock GeneratePress WordPress theme on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms loading time. I was quite impressed.
One Thing I was worried about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to produce a whole lot of big files, but this isn’t the case. You may tell that Tom literally worked hard on ensuring that every file packed in GeneratePress is as small as possible. With HTTP/2, the amount of documents isn’t as important. But the dimensions is! Have a look at some of the core GeneratePress files under:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a developer that cares about performance! And I’ve Seen the same during all of the premium add-ons. They’re as small as possible get them. In reality, Font Awesome is most likely the biggest file included. And that is not even his. Together with Font Awesome 5 arriving round the corner, we could expect this to secure smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are setup in what I would call a modular layout. You can activate/deactivate anything you are not using to ensure they do not load on your site. Since the co-developer of the perfmatters plugin that has a script manager built-in, I felt right at home for this. Everything ought to be designed this way.
If You’re curious, I am using the following add-ons on this site:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is that I no longer have to use a Child motif . This makes my life much easier. No longer editing my functions.php or header.php files. I will literally upgrade my GeneratePress theme this very moment rather than shed a single customization. The hooks add-on certainly can help make it possible. It permits you to incorporate custom code/PHP anywhere throughout your WordPress website. Best Modern WordPress Themes
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On every Page/post you have a lot of alternatives. You are able to alter the sidebar layout and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page involving the default option to a full width page, as well as disable elements.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Remember, a lot of these choices are enabled by the premium add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we would be here all day. But let me show you couple which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is your free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this can be created by precisely the same programmer as GeneratePress. It allows you a super simple way to add responsive columns into any page or post. Features include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid width
Mobile grid width
Insert Customized courses
Add custom inline styles
Equal height columns
Here is An example below:
You might want to Also catch his amazing WP Show Posts plugin also. See my featured articles on the sidebar of this site? That’s using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a particular”featured” category. You might also get it show past modified/updated articles, recent posts, etc.. I’m using the free version and it works terrific.
The Sections add-on in the premium version of GeneratePress allows you to perform all kinds of things concerning design. Consider it like a webpage builder with no bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not only for blogs! I am in fact using GeneratePress to our ecommerce website (perfmatters.io) that is running Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks like a site.
For all those Of you that are regular readers, you probably did not even notice that I changed the entire theme that powers woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour to get GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif that I had spent a year customizing. Here’s a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop motif was pretty fast, but I spent a great deal of time scrutinizing it. In fact, I’ve gotten a lot of emails from you guys asking me to publish all of my customizations. My advice today is, simply get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress motif I managed to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And keep in mind, I don’t have a kid motif. Each of the customizations were created with the awesome GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have working on woorkup? You are in luck. Tom asked if he can make a copy of woorkup for the brand new GeneratePress site library. I am pleased to let you know that you can now put in my woorkup theme in your GeneratePress site with only a single click! It is known as the Marketer motif. Get started with a fantastic blog design immediately.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved within my private website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimum site, since I do not use it for much. Since you can see it already loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to duplicate the entire look 100% in GeneratePress in under an hour. And as you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I was even able to eliminate a few plugins that weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over our business website, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a theme from Array Themes. It’s a fairly basic minimum website, as we just use it for our LLC. As you can see it already loaded pretty quickly. Best Modern WordPress Themes
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to move everything over and get it looking just how I needed it in under one hour. And as you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was able to get rid of a total of four plugins and it dropped my whole page weight 2x!
I can’t express my Excitement about locating GeneratePress and I’m moving over all my websites for this (which comprises some EDD e-commerce websites ). After I have my 9 websites all running in GP without any child themes, my life will be a breeze! The programmer has restored my faith in multi-purpose subjects , which when done the right way, can actually perform faster.
And The best news isI now have a billion more choices to choose from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the ideal option for performance-focused users that want to be able to customize and control precisely how their site appears.
You Can make GeneratePress perform pretty much anything. And since GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the website that you build will have a great foundation to make it load quickly.
Since Of that, people who assemble WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They’ll typically pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any kind of website.
However GeneratePress Might Not Be A Fantastic Combination If…
…you Need something which will instantly appear perfect out of the box.
For Example, if you know you want to produce a fashion blog, you may be happier picking out a niche theme that’s developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress has gotten a lot simpler to use, thanks to its pre-built Site Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones if you initially install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you want it to, you’ll most likely will need to go in and customize matters. And though the significant advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, many users, especially casual users, do not like having to make those changes .
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are some of the specific features that explain why GeneratePress is so popular.
Lots Of Customization Options From The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Past Functionality, another place where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization options.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, which is convenient as you will be able to see all the changes that you make in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress gives you decent possibilities, but if you have GeneratePress Premium, you’ll have the ability to customize nearly everything about your site.
For Example, if you go into the Layout area, you can configure detailed settings for your:
- Header — you can move your header around and change its styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can utilize one or two sidebars
- Blog post design — such as featured image size, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like how many widgets to add
Likewise, That the Typography area enables you to control the font for every single element on your website, including buttons:
And You also receive a thorough area to control the color of each and every element on your website.
All Whatsoever, GeneratePress will give you a lot more customization options in the WordPress Customizer compared to most other themes. This amount of detail might be a bit overwhelming if you are a beginner. But once you understand the way the preferences come together, you’ll have complete control over how your website appears.
Optimized Performance And Quick Page Load Times
Around All its features, GeneratePress consistently has a focus on exceptional performance and tidy code. The entire motif is less than 30 kB, and it will be about as small as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded themes can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which will help you avoid the render obstructing error that Google Pagespeed Insights often cites.
Place That together, and you get a superfast-loading motif. How quickly? To give you an idea, I ran a little test.
First, I put up a vacant site using a haphazard popular WordPress.org theme (Envo Magazine). After testing its functionality with Pingdom, it:
- Had a performance tier of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 seconds
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That’s Not bad in any way! But GeneratePress can perform.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on exactly the same test website without altering anything else. Here’s how GeneratePress did:
- Had a performance tier of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% quicker
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% fewer
If You perform the exact same test with other topics, you’ll continue to find that GeneratePress is one of the fastest-loading WordPress topics in life. Best Modern WordPress Themes
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus Much Modular Approach
Past Giving you more style controls from the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other helpful features like:
- Elements — a unique feature which lets you create customized hooks, page headers, or design templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a unique page header on a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is sort of like lightweight page building. It lets you create different”sections” onto a webpage, each with their own design and column preferences.
To Stay lightweight, GeneratePress also gives you a modular port where you could pick and choose what characteristics you would like to activate.
That Way, you don’t need to slow your site down for a quality that you’ll never use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Site
In The past, you had to construct GeneratePress sites from a blank canvas no matter what, which left the motif difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, though, the developer added a new Site Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users which allows you easily import any one of the 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them directly from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes — this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click on a few buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Give You Detailed Control Over Every Piece Of Content
With Most topics, each post and page will use the same settings for the most part. You might have some custom templates or formats — but you don’t have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a brand new Layout meta name box for each and every page and post:
You Can utilize this meta box to:
- Change how many sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (such as changing the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose the number of footer widgets to use
- Disable certain components, like your header, navigation menu, article featured image, post title, or footer
- Produce a special”container” for your own page builder
Where These controls are the most helpful is if you’re using a WordPress site builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you’re in a position to produce the proper baseline for your own page builder layout, making it effortless to create custom content as needed. Best Modern WordPress Themes
GeneratePress Pricing: Affordable And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress theme can be obtained for free at WordPress.org.
That said, If you are serious about using GeneratePress, I believe you should buy the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that is what makes the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you almost as many configurations in the WordPress Customizer. And you will also miss out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium is also still fairly affordable. It costs just $39.95, and that provides you use on infinite websites . You’ll also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to keep on receiving support and upgrades following the first year (you can, obviously, keep using GeneratePress following the initial year without renewing — you won’t get any more updates).
When You consider that the typical premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress offers a fantastic price.
As I mentioned, I don’t think GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You want a niche-specific motif, you can probably save time by purchasing a theme that fits your requirements for your niche out of day one.
But If you are ready to spend time changing preferences, then GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to turn it into any type of WordPress site. Or, you may even be able to locate a starter site that fits your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It’s one of the fastest-loading WordPress themes you will find. Therefore, if you’re looking for the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a great decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, so you shouldn’t have any difficulty making your website load in under one second. Best Modern WordPress Themes
