Intro 2016 New Theme
Over the past ten years, I’ve used a lot of different WordPress themes and have been really disappointed. Up until recently, I was using MyThemeShop, that was pretty good. But I still had to perform a great deal of customization to allow it to do and work the way I needed it to. A few of weeks ago I decided to give GeneratePress a try, and let me just say, it’s by far the best WordPress theme I have found in 10 years. I had been blown away and am moving all my websites to GeneratePress. I will enter precisely why in my in-depth GeneratePress review below. And if you are wondering, yes I have tried Genesis, Astra, OceanWP, Avada, X theme, Divi in addition to several other lightweight and thicker multicolored themes. 2016 New Theme
GeneratePress is a free WordPress theme created by Tom Usborne, a developer from Canada. I have actually seen it for years from the WordPress repository. Most of you know that I am pretty picky when it comes to web performance, so I have a tendency to ignore everything in the repository. Typically because a great deal of stuff on there is not that great, or not supported for long. However, in this case, that was a mistake. The theme now has more than half a million downloads, 80,000+ active installs, with over 500 5-star evaluations. So obviously Tom is doing some thing right here.
I Actually installed the free version of the motif and in a matter of 15 minutes bought the premium version. I could tell right off the bat, the programmer was thinking exactly how I was imagining a theme should work. And I will go into that more below, but let’s first look at a number of the features. I will be covering the superior edition of the subject, since it’s worth very penny. Actually, Tom, in the event that you ever read this and are seeing Scottsdale, Arizona, coffees on me.
Super lightweight and quick. Modular design allowing you to enable/disable items you don’t want running. This is one of the biggest reasons I adore GeneratePress.
Responsive, looks fantastic across all devices.
Schema built-in, for better results in SERPs.
Dramatic integration with all the WordPress Customizer. I have not been a fan of this customizer previously, but Tom does it right.
Compatible with popular plugins, Yoast SEO, WooCommerce, EDD, BuddyPress, bbPress, and WPML. Fantastic browser service back to IE8.
Additionally, it works great with all the popular fast-growing Elementor page builder. If you would like to dive into even more customizations, these are a great combo. I’ve also read that people using Beaver Builder have had success.
Font awesome built-in.
Tons of hooks and filters which make it good for developers.
Great active service from the developer. On average, 3 updates per month.
The Documentation is also unbelievable. Besides have good documentation on their site, the theme has been around long enough that everything I Googled during the setup procedure was found within a few seconds from their forum.
Diving Into GeneratePress
Now it’s Time for the fun part! I always test a brand new theme right out of the box without any customizations to just see how quickly the base is. This tells me a great deal of what I could expect by the time that I add everything for this. Running the inventory GeneratePress WordPress motif on Kinsta hosting clocked in at a whopping 265 ms load time. I was very impressed.
One Thing I was concerned about with GeneratePress was that the modular layout was going to generate a whole lot of big files, but that is not the case. You can tell that Tom actually worked hard on making sure that every record packed in GeneratePress is as small as possible. With HTTP/2, the number of files is not as significant. But the dimensions is! Have a look at some of the center GeneratePress files below:
/generatepress/css/unsemantic-grid. min.css 2.9 KB
/generatepress/style. css 7.1 KB
/generatepress/css/mobile. min.css 1.6 KB
/generatepress/js/navigation. min.js 1.1 KB
/generatepress/js/dropdown. min.js 1.5 KB
That is a developer that cares about performance! And I have Seen the same throughout all the premium add-ons. They’re literally as small as possible get them. In fact, Font Awesome is most likely the largest file contained. And that isn’t even his. With Font Awesome 5 arriving round the cornerwe could anticipate this to get smaller too.
The premium add-ons Are installation in what I would call a modular design. You can activate/deactivate anything you are not using to ensure they don’t load on your site. As the co-developer of this perfmatters plugin which has a script supervisor built, I felt right at home for this. Everything ought to be made this way.
If You’re curious, I’m using the next add-ons on this website:
No Child Theme Needed
One of The best features of GeneratePress is I no longer need to use a Child theme. This makes my life much simpler. No more editing my functions.php or header.php documents. I can literally upgrade my GeneratePress theme this exact minute rather than lose a single customization. The hooks add-on definitely helps make it possible. It permits you to add custom code/PHP everywhere throughout your WordPress website. 2016 New Theme
Other Things I Love About GeneratePress
On each Page/post that you have a great deal of options. You can change the sidebar design and the footer widgets.
You Can quickly swap a page between the default option to a complete width page, in addition to disable components.
The WordPress customizer choices is really where GeneratePress really shines! Bear in mind, lots of these options are permitted from the premium add-ons. I can’t show you everything, otherwise, we would be here daily. But allow me to show you couple which actually come in handy.
Another Plugin I highly recommend grabbing is the free Lightweight Grid Columns. Not to my surprise, this is also made by the exact same programmer as GeneratePress. It enables you a super easy way to incorporate responsive columns to any page or post. Features include:
Desktop grid thickness
Tablet grid thickness
Mobile grid width
Add Customized courses
Add custom inline designs
Equal height columns
This is An example below:
You May Want to Also catch his amazing WP Show Posts plugin too. View my featured articles on the sidebar of this site? That’s using the WP Display Posts plugin. I have it set to display posts from a particular”featured” category. You can also get it show last modified/updated posts, recent posts, etc.. I am using the free version and it works terrific.
The Segments add-in in the premium edition of GeneratePress lets you do all sorts of things concerning design. Consider it like a webpage builder without the bloat. GeneratePress is certainly not only for blogs! I am in reality using GeneratePress to our ecommerce site (perfmatters.io) that is running Easy Digital Downloads. Feel free to check it out. But as you can see below, it looks nothing like a blog.
For all those Of you that are regular readers, you probably didn’t even notice that I changed the entire motif that powers woorkup.com. It just took me about an hour for GeneratePress to mimic my MyThemeShop motif that I had spent annually customizing. Here is a comparison below.
woorkup.com Old MyThemeShop Theme
My old MyThemeShop theme was pretty fast, but I spent a lot of time scrutinizing it. In reality, I’ve gotten a great deal of emails from you guys asking me to print all my customizations. My advice now is, just get GeneratePress!
woorkup.com New GeneratePress Theme
With the New GeneratePress motif I managed to achieve faster speeds and 600 fewer lines of code! And remember, I do not have a child theme. All the customizations were made using the wonderful GP hooks and snippets plugin (both CSS and PHP).
Like the WordPress theme I have working on woorkup? You’re in luck. Tom asked if he could create a copy of woorkup for the new GeneratePress site library. I’m pleased to let you know that now you can put in my woorkup theme on your GeneratePress website with only a single click! It’s called the Marketer theme. Get started using a great blog layout instantly.
brianjackson.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
I also Moved over my personal website, brianjackson.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I was using a motif from Array Themes. It is a pretty basic minimal site, since I don’t use it to get much. As you can see it loaded pretty quickly.
brianjackson.io New GeneratePress Theme
I was Able to replicate the whole appearance 100% in GeneratePress in under one hour. And as you can view it loads even faster! Amazing. I was even able to get rid of a few plugins which weren’t needed because of GP.
forgemedia.io Old Array Theme’s Theme
Additionally, I Moved over our organization site, forgemedia.io, to GeneratePress. Previously I had been using a theme from Array Themes. It is a fairly basic minimal site, as we simply use it for our LLC. As you can see it loaded pretty quickly. 2016 New Theme
forgemedia.io New GeneratePress Theme
I had been Able to again move everything over and get it looking just how I wanted it in under an hour. And since you can view it loads faster! Amazing. I was able to eliminate a total of four plugins and it dropped my total page weight 2x!
I can not express my Excitement about finding GeneratePress and I am moving over all of my sites for this (which includes several EDD e-commerce websites ). After I’ve got my 9 sites all running in GP without any child themes, my entire life is going to be a breeze! The programmer has revived my faith in multi-purpose subjects , and that when done the right way, can actually perform quicker.
And The best news isI finally have a thousand more choices to pick from than I did earlier.
What GeneratePress Is Good For…
GeneratePress Is the perfect option for performance-focused users that wish to have the ability to personalize and control exactly how their site looks.
You Can make GeneratePress do pretty much anything. And because GeneratePress has a focus on functionality, the site that you build will have a fantastic foundation to make it load quickly.
Because Of that, those who build WordPress websites for a living love GeneratePress. They will normally pair it with a WordPress page builder and use it for literally any type of website.
But GeneratePress Might Not Be A Good Fit If…
…you Want something which will instantly appear perfect from the box.
For Example, if you know you wish to produce a fashion blog, you might be happier choosing a market theme that’s developed exclusively for trend bloggers.
Even though GeneratePress is becoming a lot simpler to use, thanks to its pre-built Website Library, GeneratePress still seems very barebones when you first install it.
So To make GeneratePress look how you want it to, you will most likely need to go in and customize things. And while the substantial advantage of GeneratePress is how customizable it is, some users, especially casual users, do not like having to make those changes themselves.
GeneratePress Features Which Make It Unique
Here Are a few of the specific characteristics that explain why GeneratePress is indeed popular.
Lots Of Customization Options In The Real-Time WordPress Customizer
Beyond Performance, another place where GeneratePress does nicely is its customization choices.
GeneratePress Utilizes the WordPress Customizer for customization, which is convenient because you will have the ability to see all the changes that you create in real time.
The Free variant of GeneratePress gives you adequate possibilities, but should you have GeneratePress Premium, you will have the ability to customize nearly everything about your website.
For Example, if you go in the Design area, you can configure detailed settings to yourown:
- Header — you can move your header round and change its own styling
- Navigation — GeneratePress gives you two different navigation options, such as sticky menus
- Sidebar design — you can use one or two sidebars
- Blog post design — like featured image dimensions, metadata, etc..
- Footer layout — just like the number of widgets to include
Likewise, The Typography area enables you to control the font to get each and every element on your site, including buttons:
And You also receive a detailed region to control the color of each and every element on your site.
All In all, GeneratePress will give you a lot more customization options in the WordPress Customizer than most other topics. This amount of detail may be a bit overwhelming if you’re a newcomer. But once you realize the way the settings come together, you’ll have complete control on how your website appears.
Optimized Performance And Fast Page Load Times
Across All its attributes, GeneratePress consistently includes a focus on exceptional performance and tidy code. The whole motif is less than 30 kB, which will be about as small as you are ever going to find for a WordPress theme. Even most other optimized WordPress topics are still 200+ kB. And a few badly coded topics can even exceed 1 MB!
GeneratePress Also does not have any code dependencies, which will help you avoid the leave blocking error that Google Pagespeed Insights often mentions.
Place That together, and you get a superfast-loading motif. How fast? To give you a sense, I ran a little test.
First, I set up a vacant site using a random popular WordPress.org motif (Envo Magazine). After testing its functionality with Pingdom, it
- Had a performance grade of 77
- Loaded in 1.05 moments
- Had a page size of 243.9 kB
- Had 15 requests
That’s Not bad in any way! But GeneratePress can do better.
Next, I activated GeneratePress on the exact same test website without changing anything else. Here is how GeneratePress failed:
- Had a performance grade of 87, 10 points greater
- Loaded in 666 ms, ~37% faster
- Had a page size of 26.8 kB, ~90% smaller
- Had 9 asks, ~40% less
If You do the exact same test with other topics, you are going to continue to find that GeneratePress is among those fastest-loading WordPress themes in existence. 2016 New Theme
Other Helpful Premium Extensions, Plus A Modular Approach
Past Giving you more design controls in the WordPress Customizer, GeneratePress Premium also comes with a lot of other helpful features like:
- Elements — a exceptional feature which lets you create custom hooks, page headers, or layout templates.
- Page Header — allows you create a unique page header onto a per-page basis.
- Sections — this is sort of like lightweight page building. It permits you to create different”sections” on a page, each with their own layout and column preferences.
To Remain lightweight, GeneratePress also provides you a modular port where you could pick and choose what features you would like to trigger.
That Way, you do not have to slow your site down for a quality which you’re never going to use.
Pre-Made Starter Sites Make It Easier To Design Your Website
In The past, you had to build GeneratePress websites from a blank canvas no matter what, which made the theme difficult for casual users to set up.
Earlier In 2018, however, the programmer added a new Website Library attribute for GeneratePress Premium users which lets you easily import any one of those 25+ pre-built demo sites.
You Can import them directly from your WordPress dashboard.
Yes this site still uses GeneratePress! All I did was click a few buttons to import a demo site.
Page-Level Settings Provide You Comprehensive Control Over Every Piece Of Content
With Most topics, every post and page will use the same configurations for the most part. You might have some custom templates or formats — but you don’t have very much control past that.
GeneratePress Changes that by giving you a new Layout meta name box for every single post and page:
You Can use this meta box to:
- Change the number of sidebars your site uses, or the sidebar orientation (like altering the sidebar from right to left)
- Choose how many footer widgets to use
- Disable certain elements, such as your header, navigation menu, article featured picture, post title, or footer
- Create a special”container” for your own page builder
Where These controls are the most helpful is if you’re using a WordPress page builder.
By Disabling certain elements, you’re able to produce the proper baseline for your own page builder layout, which makes it effortless to create custom articles as needed. 2016 New Theme
GeneratePress Replies: Cheap And Works On Unlimited Sites
The Heart GeneratePress motif can be obtained at no cost at WordPress.org.
That said, If you’re seriously interested in utilizing GeneratePress, I believe you need to purchase the GeneratePress Premium plugin, as that’s what produces the theme so elastic. The free version doesn’t give you almost as many settings in the WordPress Customizer. And you’ll also lose out on the premade Site Library.
GeneratePress Premium can be still fairly affordable. It costs only $39.95, and that provides you use on infinite sites. You’ll also get a 40% discount if you would like to renew to keep on receiving support and updates following the initial year (you can, of course, keep using GeneratePress following the first year without beating — you just won’t receive any more upgrades ).
When You consider that the typical premium WordPress theme will usually cost around $60, GeneratePress provides a great value.
As I mentioned, I do not believe GeneratePress is for everybody.
If You want a niche-specific theme, you can probably save time by buying a theme that fits your needs for your market out of day one.
But If you are ready to spend time altering preferences, then GeneratePress’ style controls give you the flexibility to flip it into any type of WordPress website. Or, you might even have the ability to locate a starter site that fits your needs to save some time.
Additionally, It’s among those fastest-loading WordPress themes that you will locate. So if you’re looking for the best performance possible, utilizing GeneratePress as your WordPress site’s base is a good decision.
If You combine it with fast-loading hosting, so you should have no problem making your website load in under one second. 2016 New Theme
